First Watercooling build

Hi!

I think i'm finally going to get the watercooling monkey off my back with this build lol

I'm planing a new build with Ryzen 1700x and a GTX1070

I want to use an EK Supremacy EVO (once i track down the AM4 bracket for it) and the MSi Seahawk GTX1070 you have on sale at the moment.

Now I've read on another post that the graphics should be OK to be booted in the bios before i hook all the tubes up and fill the system but can't find whether the CPU will be OK or not. I'm sure i saw in a Jayz2cents video that he said it was OK but am just looking for confirmation. I assume if the cpu gets too hot it'll just knock the switch off on computer?

I'm also assuming if i keep digging on the store i'll find the AM4 bracket for the EVO?

Agreed, why would you want to boot with no cooling in place?
You're right that the cpu will auto shut down if it gets too hot but its not really something you want to do plus the system would only run for a few minutes before getting to hot and shutting down.

if you want to leak test the loop first then buy a cheap PSU from e-bay for a fiver and use it to power the pump thats what i do.
 
No my point was not leak testing it was to check everything was working before building the loop, and seeing as the GTX 1070 comes with the block and the 1700X comes with no cooler, i've not really got much choice

I would have thought there was enough 'sink' in the blocks just to check everything in the bios for a couple of minutes

If it were me, I would construct the loop and leak test with a separate PSU, and then power up the system to test.

Do not run it dry.
 
That seems daft to me. Why the hell would i want to build something that complex when all i got, to stop me having to tear it all out again 5 minutes later, is having my fingers being crossed?

So you'd rather run the components without any cooling to test them... And if any of them don't function properly, you won't put that down to having run it without any cooling? :rolleyes:
 
Do NOT do that, even IF the components can take it the metal water blocks will heat up well beyond design spec and potentially damage the seals and acetal parts.
 
It's fine to power up for a couple of seconds to see if it posts ok, I've done it with my own build.
I asked the question on here and got the opposite reaction to what you're getting from these guys.
 
No Jay2centz said you can run a water blocked GPU for testing, even going as far as to say "You can test if the gpu is ok by loading into windows due to passive cooling"
CPU's generate far more heat during boot up for this sort of thing and I would not recommend it, certainly not loading into windows and "It will just shut off when it gets too hot"

With a block on each you can turn on to "see the bios came up, hardware must be ok" sure, but turn it straight off.

This the bracket you need.
Also, i would get a proper cooler if you just want to check the CPU works. As has already been said, the CPU will generate to much heat with just a dry block on.
