1080ti Overkill for 2560x1080?

Hey guys so at some point this week i'm purchasing my brother a new GPU as he's currently using 970 that apparently isn't keeping up with the games he plays.

He continues to tell me he wants a 1080ti but to me it just feels like it's overkill for his resolution. especially at 60hz. I've recommended he upgrade to a 1080 but he doesn't want to know and he's just dead set on a 1080ti.

Just for clarification is a 1080ti overkill at that resolution or am i over thinking it. He says he needs the extra GPU grunt for streaming aswel as playing games but i just don't know how much of a toll streaming takes upon his FPS.

Any help/clarification or suggestions would be most grateful. Thanks!

The 1080ti will smash that resolution silly. Most games it will be overkill. There are some that it cant maintain 60fps but that's at 2560x1440.

I just upgraded from 1920x1200 to 2560x1440 and opted for 1080.

Make sure you've got a fast CPU to drive it as well. Otherwise it's a waste.

I would advise him to go for the 1080 if he only wants to play at 60Hz. Stress wise 2560x1080 is closer to 2560x1440 than it is to 1920x1080 but it's still fluid in most stuff on a 980ti nevermind a 1080.

He's currently using the 5820k i think it should suffice.

I've tried advising him to go for a 1080 but he doesn't seem to want to listen to me.

I use a 980ti at 3440x1440 at 100hz and at 4k 60hz hdr i'm in desperate need of a upgrade my self.

But i'm waiting for Nvidia's new cards my self as i feel it's a tad pointless of me to buy into a 1080ti when i could hold off a extra 6-8 months and get extra performance out of the new cards for a similar price.

No such thing as overkill on a graphics card

something will be able to kill it now if not very soon. Budget is the significant factor.

I lost it at the "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!" LMAO I wish it was that simple though. I'm lending him the money as he doesn't even have it all but he's a stubborn little s*** when it comes to him not getting his way.

Tell him what he saves now, he can spend later. He'll want a 2080 / 2080ti when they launch too. But he spent it all on the 1080ti.

i say go for the 1080ti. He can always add some res scale to games now, he'll never have that "what if i got the ti" feeling when his frames dip below 60 (and just enjoy his games), there's fast sync (which with a ti would have enough horsepower to do something useful), it has enough horsepower for a rift if he chooses to get one of those as well, and he can always upgrade his monitor later. Changing cards more often costs more money, and you have less time when your card bats everything out of the park. Plus if he sells his 970 now, the upgrade will cost only £500.

Or you could sell him your 980ti and get the ti yourself?

The more powerful, the longer it'll last I suppose. But if you're being forced into buying the 1080ti, keep it for yourself and pass on your hand-me-down

I have a 1080 and game at 1440p 60hz but there are games where I have to lower the settings so as to not go below 60. A Ti would solve this so I would consider a ti suitable for 1440p but certainly no more (in the games I play).

I would pass him my 980ti so i could buy my self a 1080ti but the problem is my card is the hydro copper 980ti and his isn't watercooled so that's a no go

Gtx 1080 is more than enough for 2560x1080. I have a 1080ti and it's overkill even at 144hz.

I had to upgrade to a 1440p monitor which I should have tomorrow.

I can only repeat what wise words has already been said. No such thing as overkill the only thing that matters is budget and getting most out of it. Knowing that you have some power in reserve instead of driving on the edge is always nice.

He'll have the option to upgrade to 1440p with a 1080Ti

It's the reason why I'm looking at 1080Ti despite still happy playing on 1080p and not really needing to jump to 1440p yet BUT I'd like to have that option and Ti to me is best upgrade path if I ever decide I want to jump to 1440p or even 4k (although at 4k even Ti struggles over 60fps)
