McDonalds workers due to strike for £10 an hour...

London might not be "theirs" but if they work there as cleaners / burger flippers / road sweepers etc what do want them to do, pay half their salary every month to commute in from some miserable **** hole like Harlow or Stevenage <enter another miserable **** hole new town built for chavs here> ? HOusing needs to be afordable in all areas for people of all jobs.

I don't think housing does need to be affordable in all areas, certainly not zone 1 or 2 at least. Plenty of other people not eligible for social housing find themselves commuting.

Then how much do you want to clean the cleaners and shelf stackers? You will need to cover transport costs.

Nothing wrong with commuting but people need to stop crapping themselves when cleaners etc earn £25k+ in London.

You want services in those areas then you pay extra to have them there. Not just grind your staff into the ground financially because....

I don't want to clean any cleaners thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can pay such people minimum wage and still find applicants for these roles, if you have trouble recruiting then you offer more money to attract more applicants. The living situation of the employees (whether they have kids or not, whether they live in a flat share, have inherited a cheap council flat, have a partner who is the main breadwinner or whether they're supposed to be the breadwinner and have to pay market rate for rent etc..) has little to do with how much you chose to pay them.

Have you been to a London supermarket, coffee shop, McDonald's lately?

The only people that work on them are the typical immigrants "15 to a 3 bed terrace" and Gavinda and Jaipur that work 19h days and send 66% back to the subcontinent...

No local Londoners work in the service industry in central London because it is horrific.

I really used to love that city but tbh I hope something drastic happens to the housing market or British attitudes to housing change.

That's a bit racist tbh.. why do you *need* to have native British people serving you? I don't care if it is Gavinda who stacks the shelves in Tesco or cleans the bogs my office.

It is a bit of an exaggeration too tbh.. there are plenty of teenagers living with their parents in London who have Saturday jobs etc.. and plenty of Students with part time jobs too.

If they can afford to send 66% of their wages back to the subcontinent then they are obviously being overpaid! ;)

[Triggered] If I had more time I could explain why calling them "Gavinda" and "Jaipur" was bad. Or are you someone that calls everyone from that part of the world, "Gavinda"? Perhaps you refer to chinese people as Lee or ching chong. [/Triggered]

Doesn't matter roll on automation pls, bored of stale arguments that ultimately irrelevant in the face of social technologies advancing.

So you want these jobs to be replaced by technology? That just means that they will have to rely on support from the state ie. taxpayer money.

It's not really something that can be disagreed with. Inflation by definition is something that can only occur as a result of the supply of money increasing faster than the increase in the rate of productivity.

The money required to raise the minimum wage isn't coming out of thin air though. I made this point earlier in the thread. It will either lead to increased prices of goods/services, a lower quality product (cutting costs of ingredients etc.) or the amount of staff employed will have to reduce (someone will have to lose their job and everyone else will have to do more work to accommodate their wage increase).

The fat cats at the top are not simply going to suck it up and make less money.

He's not wrong, you know!

Then they will have to adapt, which will cause markets to further fluctuate.

People have always said that the world will end if workers at the bottom get more. It's never been true.

Increased labour costs will be:

1. Absorbed by the employer, reducing profit margins

2. Passed on to the customer, who may chose to shop elsewhere

3. Mitigated by replacing humans with automation

Option 3 seems to be the trend at the moment, can't imagine it will be long before automated ordering/payment is brought in at McDonalds. Therefore they can cut their staff by 10-20% and the people cooking can get the £10/hr a lot of people seem to be supporting and those that loose thier jobs can enjoy queuing up at the job centre
