Hi there,

I've got a couple of sound cards but can't get them working properly in my PC. Currently using an Asus Xonar DG which is giving me grief, lots of interference (particularly sensitive to my oculus rift weirdly) which ruins the rumble experience. Onboard sound is borked and won't output through the rear speakers at all, even if i try different sockets and reconfigure. (Realtek HD Audio on X58-Ud3r). I use a steelseries usb headset for sound.

I want a good reliable PCI sound card, any recommendations?

It's for running 2x lepy amps and four transponders in chassis mode...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Asus Essence ST (used from the bay) worth considering? This is presuming you just require stereo sound.

Does your board have S/PDIF output, have you considered an external DAC?

Might be best to look at external options if you're getting interference with two internal sound cards.

Are the 2 cards both Asus, or is the other a different brand?

I have onboard (mobo) Realtek HD Audio (won't output to rear speakers for some reason) so it's used for my 2.1 speakers on the occasions I don't want to use the headphones/headset (not very often)
Asus Xonar DG in a PCI slot (for transponders)
Steelseries USB headphones used for sound (I have removed and disabled the Oculus Rift headphones)

I have identified that when I lift my Rift headset up and the screens engage (light up), the interference increases massively.

Could it be GPU power surge?

Increased current or data signaling can cause interference especially to sound card integrated into cramped motherboard.
Separate sound card has its own PCB and hence starts from lot better position.
But being physically close to graphics card can increase interference.
Also graphics card's power cables routed near would be one possible source of GPU load related interference.
Especially non-reference factory overclocked 980Tis can consume quite a lot.

You could try running some CPU stress test to bracket if also it causes interference.
In that case PSU might have problems in keeping voltage stable enough if it's isn't good.

From internal sound cards there would be no sense to buy new sound card for obsolete PCI.
PCI-express sound card would work just fine in that lowermost PCI-e slot.

Thanks for that EsaT

I think i have a pci-e soundcard knocking around that I could try instead. I used it previously in one of the small PCI-E slots near the 16x PCI-E that is home to my 980Ti. Since adding the inatek USB3 hub in there for my rift (extra sensors) I switched to the PCI card lower down. Can I use a PCI-E soundcard with short interface in a long PCI-E interface slot? are they compatible? I might have to have a think about which slots I have used and see if there is an alternative config...

I'll check the GPU powercable routing to see if it's interfering. It definitely comes past the soundcard...

Yes you can use short (x1) type cards in a full sized slot, I use my Asus STX in the bottom slot on my motherboard without any problems.

Sorted, spare sound card Asus Xonar DGX lol, in the PCI-E slot at the bottom of the mobo and no interference at all...I have moved some power cables out of the way which seemed quite close to the previous soundcard as well to be sure.

Thanks for the tips gents, much appreciated.

If that Xonar DG is as old as I would expect PCI sound card to be its capacitors might have simply aged/worn out and become unable to filter/stabilize voltage.
