Dead GTX 1070 Seahawk - Replacement?

Need some input, my 1070 died over the weekend - the retailer are going to refund the cost:

£434.99+VAT

Cost/perfomance wise, is the 1080 the best option? I have a LG34UC97 3440x1440

I am looking at the MSI Gaming X Plus 1080, hopefully it's quiet enough.

Thoughts?
 
If the MSI you mentioned has a similar cooler/fan to the MSI Quicksilver 1070 I have then I would go for it.

It's the best GPU cooler I've ever had, it really is that good.

I use MSI LED tool which is set to green/yellow/red depending on temperature, red turning on when it reaches 65c.

It never turns red.
 
Ah, I had the AIO seahawk previously.

I think I'm going to go for the msi 1080, just waiting on refund confirmation for the 1070.

Not sure the 1080 is classed as a mid range card?

your running an ultra wide monitor i believe ... above 60hz im guessing ? maybe G-sync ?

if so, take a wake into the bath room, splash some water on your face, palm slap to the face and look in the mirror repeating the words - nothing is Justifiable with with PC gaming , I might as well buy a Wii U .... then you can look at the Ti in a new light ;)

plus get better resale value in the future

It's only my opinion, I only said it's glorfied mid range card because of it's specs and TDP, years ago AMD would have had a competitive product of similar specs which and the card we know as a 1080 would be sold at 1070 prices. Unfortunately AMD seemed to have lost their touch when it comes to designing good GPU's and Nvidia have left them for dust in all aspects of GPU design and manufacturing and can afford to sell what would have been a £350 card at nearer £500.

I have one of the original ultrawides so no g-sync goodness for me.... 60 hz.

I see what you mean, card prices are pretty crazy.

Saving grace I guess is I bought an expensive 1070 and I can now get a 1080 upgrade for little to no cost.
 
if it helps, seems 1080 ti chips will be produced in fewer numbers in the future * whats going around the rumor mill*

but can see your thinking for 1080 at 60hz, its just Ti would last you longer unless you like to upgrade every 2 odd years :)
 
For 3440x1440 I could see a 1080 struggling to reach a consistent 60fps at ultra. A 1080ti, not so much. Also, as we've seen from VEGA the 1080ti is still king and will likely be for the next 6months+ until Nvidia release their next series of GPUs. I think the 1080ti is a much better option for that resolution, especially with future-proofing in mind.

But if you are set on a MSI Gaming 1080, I can find one for £479.99, which is quite a good price.

To be fair my 1070 has always held it's own, I mainly play league and i'm using a GTX 660 at the moment in the meantime and it's fine :D

I have been playing pubg/doom/batman arkham city/tomb raider and all have been good on my current card, so a free bump to 1080 may make the most sense...

I'll keep my eye out for bargains, I don't necessarily need to get it asap, if I can get a bargain deal on a TI I would snap it up.
