Ebay scams - how do they work?

I think they will used other payment types not PayPal.

Actually yeah - I think you're probably right on the money (lol) just try to change the payment method at the last minute - 1 in 20 people might not think twice and get caught out...

Simple happened to me 10 years ago on a brand new Xbox 360

Guy had 10 listed at around £100 cheaper, bought one and then got a message back saying his PayPal was not working so to do a bank transfer into his account. Been young and thinking I got a bargain been scammed was the last thing I thought, anyway transfered money and that the last I saw of it.

I think they will used other payment types not PayPal.

You obviously had his details so couldnt you have chased him through the small claims court?

ITV programme : EBAY SCAMMERS (21:00 31/08) - Irresponsible journalism ?

Anyone else just watched this junk - they do not explain the mechanism of the fraud clearly to the viewer, or further, even suggest that maybe Ebay/Paypal should improve processes to protect users - completely reprehensible, just sensationalist journalism.
[mechanism is, as discussed above - folks have been conned to make direct bank to bank payments]

... Amusing bit where the police drugs dog eats biscuit from fraudsters flat.

had that on my tv as well but i was too engrossed playing my 3ds to pay much attention, they started greeting after learning they might get 5 years lol stupid scammers

People use ebay as a 0% payday loan too. If they need some quick cash for a week or 2 then they list something and just repay the money after you've disputed it through Paypal.

I only caught the last 20 minutes or so, they were convicted mainly of money laundering iirc. I did laugh at the police sniffer dog but imagine if that was a key piece of evidence.

I'm guessing the scam was listing items that didn't exist and pocketing the money, or given that they had loads of fake ID's and credit cards they are probably just running up credit card debts.

Yes i do funnily enough if i can get something cheaper elsewhere then I do. Plus its the convenience of basically 1 click purchasing.

Plus its usually ridiculously quick the next day or so as sellers are paranoid about getting low stars on their p&p ratings. Amazon on the other hand takes a week or more for non-Prime members who get treated like second class customers.

Completely agree. All my deliveries from ebay have been surprisingly quick, usually only 1 or 2 working days at the most

Usually look at buyers ratings/sales
agree , do not know if there are ways for seller to get around that ?
if they have been selling similar products to other people with credible feedback as buyer/seller, don't have thousands of sales (ie in China) or questionable address, and reply to a question (for more expensive stuff) then have been good.
Chinese sites (when you want to use them) do sometimes have stock photos and the item does not match - so have had a few refunds
.... have not yet tried aliexpress but often seems cheaper.

I'm actually amazed anyone still uses eBay to buy or sell anything of value.

It's an absolute vipers nest of scammers.

This.

I used Music Magpie to sell my Samsung Galaxy Note 4. They gave me (via bank transfer) what eBay would have given me anyway after you have knocked off 10% eBay commission and p&p. Hassle free, and money was in my bank in 3 working days from sending via Royal Mail 48 tracked pre-paid by Magpie.

Never sold anything on ebay so dont know about costs. Sounds pretty bad by the sounds of it.

I've just sold an item using ebay global shipping for the first time. Sent the parcel off to the ebay distribution centre using Collectplus and then ebay will send it to the person in China.

Got currently about 25 items on ebay and getting a few watchers but no firm interest so when a guy messages me to do a deal cash on collection I couldn't refuse. Ebay police picked up on a message
I sent the guy and now my account is restricted for 7 days lol.

Considering I've paid them over £160 in final value fees so far this year I think they are getting their value out of me.

I'm actually a little surprised that they are allowed to screen your messages.

I think they screen for things like addresses and phone numbers on messages. I suppose they are losing out on revenue by people getting around the system.

Anyway, I've had to take all my listings down until my week suspension is over.

1600 positive feedbacks and over £64k of sales over the years and they treat me like a pleb

Doesnt matter how many sales you have, my work has £1.5million of sales on eBay in the life of the account and they have gave us warnings regarding selling outside of ebay, even though we are a walk in shop aswell and if someone buys something over the counter then it has to get ended on eBay. They can't seem to grasp that some people don't have ebay accounts and just want to buy it over the counter. So we are careful about selling items that have had recent messages through eBay. And I can understand why as we are using their service to advertise and sell items and if we sell it off ebay then they don't get any money for it.

Yeh this happend to me recently with a friend of mine who sells on eBay. I bought a phone case from him in person, but he told me to also 'buy' one on eBay to show sales.

Yep, we've even resorted to having to buy stuff through our personal ebay accounts, marking it for collection only then marking it as paid when the customer picks it up. All so ebay still gets their fees. ridiculous, but I can see why ebay are doing it.

Is there a scam whereby someone who is selling similar items to you will message you to make an offer outside of ebay and then know ebay will pickup on your messages to sell outside of ebay and your account would then become restricted and therefore eliminate any competition?
