Ebay scams - how do they work?

Is there a scam whereby someone who is selling similar items to you will message you to make an offer outside of ebay and then know ebay will pickup on your messages to sell outside of ebay and your account would then become restricted and therefore eliminate any competition?

Haven't heard of that myself and I work with ebay 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Seems strange that the guy who messaged me to deal outside of ebay and arrange a collection today and pay cash, is selling exactly the same kind of items I am when I checked. He never turned up at the arranged time and said ebay would know he had come around my house to buy the items. I am now banned off ebay for 7 days so cannot relist any of my items which would compete with his.

I caught a repeat of "The eBay Scammers" from the beginning last night, they were shipping people in from eastern Europe just to spend a day opening several new bank accounts, getting ebay users to pay for £2000-£10000 for cars/vans outside of Paypal and into said bank accounts and withdrawing the money right away before the buyer cottoned on that it was a scam. It was mentioned that they'd probably made around £2million in the space of around a year and half, the ring leader got 5 years and the others got 3-4 years - who says crime doesn't pay?

I thought the Proceeds of Crime Act prevents those thinking that they can keep the proceeds and just do the time?

He probably reported you, it's not so much a scam but you fell into his trap. If you sell outside of ebay they don't get their cut so you've fallen foul of T&C's.

The police said that they thought most of the money had probably been sent to Romania, ie. they didn't have a clue where it was and none of the victims got their money back. It didn't say whether all of the Gucci bags and other expensive stuff were confiscated unless I missed it.

The ringleader will probably serve a couple of years and then be deported back to Romania to gleefully meet up with all the money he scammed :(

He says he was given a warning too but his account was not restricted like mine. Will find out this weekend when I relist my items as he says he will buy and pay for them through ebay.

Just seems funny he is selling exactly the same range of items as me but wants to buy my mine?

It sounds weird, him saying that Ebay would know that he's been around your house he's either paranoid or trying too hard to convince you that he's your friend and not the person who set you up. If he offers to buy outside of Ebay again just tell him no and report him. I'm not sure what Ebay policy is but you might get longer or permanent bans for repeated offences.

Is it exactly the same?
Maybe he's an expert/dealer and knows something about your item which makes it worth more than you're selling it for?

Simple happened to me 10 years ago on a brand new Xbox 360

Guy had 10 listed at around £100 cheaper, bought one and then got a message back saying his PayPal was not working so to do a bank transfer into his account. Been young and thinking I got a bargain been scammed was the last thing I thought, anyway transfered money and that the last I saw of it.

I think they will used other payment types not PayPal.

Hmm, see nowadays people would scoff at anybody sending a payment via bank transfer to an unknown seller online, but I used to accept and send quite a lot of transactions that way back then. Obviously there was more trust in the early days of the net and ebay was a better experience like 2000-2005. I remember paying something like £550 for a laptop back then (needed it quick) via bank transfer and the seller came through, also had somebody pay me a similar sum for a TV.

And all the transactions on member's market have been solid, it's a shame though that the audience there is restricted, I think any forum member should be allowed to buy on there, only have limits for sellers.

sounds as though you should have nothing more to do with him, he might complain/return item; does ebay allow you to block/decline someone ?
Google folks who have been banned for life - obtaining an alternate paypal address would be difficult, some references to monitoring IP addresses too.

Ebay lets you block bidders with flags on their account for transaction disputes, but they're so protective of their buyers it's hardly worth the bother as many people don't even bother raising issues to a decent level.

If you want a classic example of a scam currently on Ebay do a search for a seller called ma666ot and look at what he's selling and the prices.
16 people have bought one of the items too to date. I had to do a doublecheck when I saw the prices. It was a "what ! where's the buy button, then hang on think about it......." They can kiss their money goodbye ! Some of the descriptions of the items are copied off Curry's website! One of the items is listed as one thing then the description is for an entirely different item and 3 people have bought it !

He had well over 200 feedback, thats the thing. PayPal with all its silly faults is the best method. Or better find a local seller and pickup.
