Hi everyone, after a bit of advice, ordered and paid for a MBA from a high street chain, says its a 2017 model, but I'm wondering if I should have gone for the pro. None of my family have ever owned a MacBook, so your advice is greatly received, as was advised to get this with 128GB storage and 2TB of Cloud storage.

The 12" MacBook is better than the Air in pretty much every way.

You can get her 1TB of cloud storage with OneDrive as well as Office with student discount. It may work out cheaper then 2TB of iCloud storage (which is way more than she'd need to be honest).

Cheers for your advise, was in a bit of a rush to be honest, Ill call them back up tomorrow and reorder, is it not worth the extra for the Pro as its £1299 compared to the Macbook at £1150, I'll also look into the office. Is the office a one off or a yearly thing?

Worth finding out what her university will provide in terms of storage also. I had unlimited google drive for 5 years which was nice.

Seriously get the 12” MacBook. It’s just been updated with Kaby Lake and is lovely.

Good choice.

While it's not the most cost effective system, girls tend to love macs.

My ex-awlays said she never liked OSX (now MacOS), but after a couple of years of me having a Macbook, and the onset of Windows 10, she decided she wanted one, and loves it.

EDIT: Saw you chose the MBA and not the Macbook as in the title. Yeah the Air is old news now. Change to the Macbook.

She'll just need to keep on top of space management with 128GB. Bear in mind, 2TB storage is kind of irrelevant if she can't get online - ideally she would store all the college stuff on the laptop and just sync to cloud for backup.

If she sticks to a few 'standard' apps and college work, 128GB is fine (unless it's some sort of art or media course!).

Of course the Pro with more space would make things easier and nicer if you have the money and can still return it.

The other option would be to get her a nice USB 3 external drive which she stores all her college stuff on and backs up regularly, then you can even get rid of the 2TB cloud storage?

Ignore all the £300-600 cheap Windows laptop people. They're just jealous cos they can't afford a MBP for their daughter for college :p

If she's a student her college/uni will provide her with office365 for free. Depending on how good their IT system is, they will almost certainly be using cloud based learning so her documents will have to be held on their subscription plan with either Microsoft or Google. The lecturer in class will need to collaborate with documents so makes things much easier (and saves you money).

Keeping documents here is wise. I've seen so many students over the years start crying when there documents have been held on a usb stick or hdd which has either been lost or broken. In addition many are banning external storage media due to the increased virus risk which makes it hard for students to carry on working if that's where they saved documents.

You should also be entitled to student discount via unidays.

Makes zero difference these days between Mac or Windows. Buy whatever you prefer.

That’s because there are more people using Windows 10.

Can’t say I have problems on either Windows 10 or Mac OS.
True but Win 10 issues are widespread, especially with the latest update. macOS Sierra is pretty stable and the dreaded beachball hasn't been anywhere near as prolific as earlier releases. Some Win 10 installs end up in an endless boot loop that require re-installation.

I don't really think macOS vs. Windows stability is a thing any more, they're both pretty rock solid if you aren't running on trash hardware.

Agreed. And if it will be for university use I highly doubt she will encounter any of these "issues".

Then again the 12" macbook would be a nice choice for uni especially if she is already an iphone user.
