What happened to all the good old OcUK Lynching and Permabanning?

This turned from a moaning thread to a running argument now.. Does seem bizarre how someone who's been here since 2016 knows so much though. Who is this returnee?

I think a lot of veterans are grown up now, too. That certainly makes a difference to posting style. I dread to think of the first things I posted here and on the internet in general.

Dear tracertong,

You have received a warning at Overclockers UK Forums.

Please do not refer to posters as "**********". This is a banned term that will simply antagonise.

Yeah, this.

It's all a bit serious. Even photoshop threads barely get off the ground now.

We're short on crazies struggling to life, I miss that. TIAM used to generate a lot of humour to spread out through GD, but then got hamstrung by adding restrictive rules to throttle all that - damn shame. And lots of the guys who livened it all up got perma'd (Theophany) or otherwise put on-notice (mags) or hounded until they left (lafemmefatale)

The habit of moving active GD threads to backwater subforums takes a lot away from GD. That Oxlade-chamberlain medical thread should have resulted in an almighty rinsing of the OP for such a stupid post, once he posted up his crap reasoning, but instead it just sank in the football forum.
I once had a thread about a news story in which a guy got a boner during an organised naked cycle ride moved to the pedal power forum: ridiculous.

this, if something is put in gd leave it in gd.

if we wanted a very neich view point we'd have put it in the subforum

Taking that to an extreme then there's probably no point in having any sub-forums at all if what you're looking for is the widest possible audience. And that would be discounting that many people post in the wrong sub-forum either out of habit (e.g. they mostly post in Sports Arena and forgot to change the location for their thread on which car to buy) or were unaware that there might be a more appropriate location.

You're right that moderators don't always get it right when re-categorising threads, it's often a judgement call but just because a poster doesn't want something to be moved to the "correct" sub-forum doesn't mean they're right to post it in GD.

I suspect there are a number of reasons why you see fewer dramas than in previous years including as a few options - many of the user base have grown up and so either use forums less frequently or differently than they did before, there are other forms of social media which allow for even more instantaneous reactions and histrionics than forums, the moderators have a wider array of tools which offer more granularity to assist them in moderating forums.

well that would be such a stupid thing to do that im sure @Dolph has a Latin name for it.

If there is it's probably related to reductio ad absurdum but the basic point still applies that just because a user posts a thread doesn't mean that they're right about where it should be located. As I've said sometimes it's a judgement call but if a thread is posted in the wrong location it's often in GD and in the cases where they are aware they're posting in the wrong location that tends to be because the user wants the widest possible audience in the shortest timeframe regardless of whether they might get better or more relevant answers elsewhere.

Reductio ad absurdum?

To be honest, it was quite common on forums when Moderators wanted to bury a thread or posts to move the thread somewhere random and obscure - a bit like "Burying bad news" as famously (and tastelessly) practised by Ms Jo Moore on 9/11.

Isn't he saying that he knows him personally, and isn't a returnee?

If he knows me personally then he knows what I'm like In real life and he would love me like everybody else.
Pretty sure he worked for Spie and didn't have a nice experience. Because I defended Spie originally he went nuclear and just has a go about me and gets my stories wrong. He was right and I was wrong but he can't let it go for some reason.
