I've had Autos now for almost 10 years and wouldn't ever consider going back to manual. When it mattered, it was because I was doing almost 50k a year and the ZF box in the 530d was not only quicker at changing (even though it was a conventional TC box) but also more economical over the manual (comparative to EU tests albeit).
When I chose the M5, it was mind made up as it only came in M-DCT and I can tell you now, there is nothing that gearbox does, or does not do, that a manual would provide. The engine braking is almost spot on, the blip on downshift is better, it will bounce off a limiter, it shifts faster, I can change gear when I want. What can a manual provide me that I would ever want (except stalling)
