So on the 23rd I fly to Brazil, but with a huge layover of 10hours on the way, 12 on the way back, in NY. Now, I see this as a bit of a challenge. I should have about 6 hours on the way and 8hours on the way back, to go do something. It's day time both times as well.

I've been to New York a couple of times before, so I've done most the major touristy stuff, however, I think it would be a great challenge to see what I can fit in, in that time I have.

If you were given that time, on both legs, how would you use it? What would you see/ eat/ drink/ visit?

Was going to make this in La Cuisine, but thought GD would provide some interesting angles :p

It will take you probably over an hour and $60 each way so that's 2 and a half hours gone. That leaves you 5 and a half hours.

I'd probably get something to eat, have a wander around either central park, 5th avenue, world trade centre/battery park or maybe even take the statton island ferry. You could always do some shopping if you need some jeans etc as not much else is very reasonable given the exchange rate.

So it's 10 hrs and 12 hrs, so I accounts for 4 hours either off each one, but I will need to make sure timing on getting back is OK. JFK is a pain.

I don't need any shopping, I can shop anywhere really. More want really random things you can only do in NYC.

Long time since I used these routes for public transportation, so they may be out of date, but try the Air Train from JFK to Jamaica Station, switch to either the E train to Penn Station(subway), or L.I.R.R. to Penn Station, walk a couple of blocks to 34th. St, take another subway to W4th. Washington Square, (can't remember train numbers), then walk down Bleecker to NoHo and SoHo and Little Italy, lots of quirky stores and unusual things to see around there.

If I had that time spare I would have made a trip to Carlo's Bakery to see if the food is as good as it looks on the show, Is Hoboken hard to get to and back in your time frame? Just had a look online and seems they've opened a store in Times Square now which would be easier to get to?

THIS. I drool uncontrollably whenever Cake Boss is on the TV.

I went there in July......it is as good as it looks

Hmmm might have to add that one to the list then!

Is this quicker than a cab then?

Have you considered going in the opposite direction and exploring somewhere like Longbeach instead?
Thought you meant longbeach CA for a minute, was like huh? But I hadn't... did a quick google, is there much to do there?

Another thought is Brooklyn. I would love to check out some arty places round there. I haven't done any time in Brooklyn.

Lucky :) The original Hoboken store or one of the newer ones? from what I read last time I looked into it going to the Hoboken store might result in you queuing outside but they provide hot drinks whilst you wait.

It wasn't the original store....... It was the one in NYC itself but not times square.....

We also went to an amazing cookie place called Levains, and Juniors(Cheesecake) & the cheesecake factory (In Chicago) a few times.

Talking of Chicago, if anyone goes I recommend Texas de Brazil for steak!

I'd want much more time in NY. Absolutely amazing city - I've been 3 times now. :D

Getting back to JFK can be a headache by cab tbh, I'd allow plenty of time.
