I think the £500 budget is too restrictive.

You've got to buy a car, get it roadworthy, AND modify it (otherwise it will simply be whomever falls on the best bargain).

Yes a £500 budget potentially opens this up to more people, but I personally think the budget needs to be at least £750 (I nearly voted £1k, but assumed more would vote £750).
 
Well nobody is getting any decent power increase on a £500 car for £250 :P a cut off exhaust and some racing stripes are my kind of mods for a £500 car
 
You could though. If you don't blow your £500 banger up you can sell it, and in true top gear fashion maybe sell it for more than you paid for it.
 
Stupid question, but if you're planning on racing it anywhere wouldn't you need a roll cage or some form of racing licence?

Not on anything non-competative, so RWYB or public track days are fine, just need a helmet.
