it's 2017

I just have a very large house with 1-2 foot stone internal walls. No ***** given when it comes to sound. :) Thankyou 1422! (build date)

I'd not cope in a plasterboard house.

my point is what's the point of having a battery powered computer with wireless in my pocket that i can't use as a set of wireless headphones
Probably because it's speakers aren't (usually) great, may not be stereo and would require the TV have a wireless system that can work with the phone? (and the phone have the ability to act as a wireless speaker).
The number of people that would use it would be relatively small as well so not a major selling point.

It would make more sense for the TV to get a low audio latency bluetooth adaptor built in so you can use proper bluetooth earphones with it (you can buy these adaptors fairly cheaply that connect to either the earphone out, or the line out via the phono or scart on the TV). It could also work as a remote control interface* - or even put a heaphone jack on the remote so the bluetooth works for both functions;)

*There are now devices using bluetooth for the remote controls, the obvious one being the Fire TV, but the likes of the latested Virgin Media Tivo also use it from memory.

I think I'm being stupid. I have a lovely pair of wireless cans I use with the tv.

Pick them up off the stand and pop them on, works if I'm transmitting data to the tv too....

What have I missed?

true, but you could then at least use the phone as the equivalent of a bluetooth dongle.

it's not so much a case of why do it, but why it hasn't been done, would be convenient for all sorts of devices not just specifically phones/tv's

for example the ps4's capability of using the controller for audio output, albeit much more universal.

The main reason will be cost of implementation and lack of demand.

It makes sense for a wireless controller for a games console to have audio output through the controller if the console has voice comms.
There hasn't been that same need/reason for doing it with TV's.

Write to Samsung/Sony/Panasonic with the idea, if enough people express an interest it's the sort of thing they might look at.

Exactly; if you don't want to make noise you wear decent cans and have a lovely viewing experience.

If noise isn't an issue you use the tv audio or an AV system if you want your innards rumbled as Arnie blows up a nunnery.

I just can't see a demand, or even a purpose?

Is it just me, or have PCs taken a step back on Bluetooth tech? When I had no BT items, like my old "Barton" XP2800 system, I swear it had BT. But now I have a few BT items including earphones, my 5820k system lacks BT natively.

Maybe I just bought a budget motherboard, Gigabyte X99 Gaming 5P, as part of my "early bird Black Friday" bargaintastic deal a few years ago.

No I'd agree with this. But a dongle is so cheap these days, and the range and performance is so good, I don't see it as an issue.

Not seen a laptop without Bluetooth.
