4790 to 4790K - Worth the bother?

On the road....
Hi, I’ve currently got a 4790 and am wondering if I’d benefit much from the K variant having overclocked it?

I’ve got a GTX 1070 running 3 24” 1080p displays in Nvidia surround @ 5760x1080 and am wondering if a faster cpu would bring much if any benefit?

I’d sell my existing 4790 to offset the extra cost of the K variant but, before I do I’m just making sure it would be worth it....

My initial plan was to get a second 1070 for SLI but the current pricing of them is putting me right off (I paid £299 for my current card about 6months back)

Opinions please. :)

If you can upgrade for free maybe. At such a high resolution you're probably already leaning on the graphics card very heavily.

save up some money, sell the 1070 and buy a 1080ti if you can. otherwise wait for volta (which could be 12 months off for all we know) and weigh up 2nd hand v new then.

Yes, I think I most likely am, basically if my current cpu is good enough then I’m not particularly bothered about getting the K variant and will refocus on either a second 1070 or indeed a 1080ti

Just so very loathe to pay current GPU prices though they are frankly absurd at the mo.

Yeah I'm in the same situation. Graphics cards prices are laughably over priced.

It depends on your motherboard. My brother went over my head and got a PC built by a local store and came home with a 4770k but in a H series board.

That was after me suggesting the 4790k but now he can't even overclock his processor without replacing the board.

So if you are in the same situation and you don't have a Z board then you're wasting your time.

On top of that, like others have said, you will get way more performance boost from upgrading your graphics card. There's no point tearing your system apart for 10 more FPS when a new GPU alone could give you 20-30 more.

You'll basically get near full retail price by selling your GTX 1070. Price increases are far more pronounced on GTX 1070 downwards.

You can spend over £400 on a new 1070 and a 1080 is barely £80 more.

I’ve got a Z97 pro board so overclocking or indeed SLI isn’t a problem.

Either another 1070 or 1080 is still one hell of an outlay for another 20-30fps (given my current setup rocks along nicely) the big jump surely is the 1080ti but the pricing of that - to me - is just plain LOL.

I don’t mind pulling apart my system to swap the cpu for a small cost / reasonable improvement but for the extra outlay for a 1080ti frankly I’d rather spend the money on something I felt I was getting value for money from which with current GPU pricing I wouldn’t be so that’s a non starter.

Maybe I’ll sell the 1070 and perhaps look toward a second hand 1080, or just wait, surely this GPU price madness isn’t going to last that much longer, is it?:(

I think a precedent has been set. £400 is the new £300. I wouldn't recommend changing the 1070 personally. I don't think Volta will be that far away, it makes no sense to swap cards from the same generation.

Does your current mobo allow 'enhanced turbo' - every motherboard I've used since z77 has it and it allows for all cores to boost to the max turbo frequency. That would make your 4790 a 4ghz chip. An overclocked 4790K will net an extra 10-20% and will probably be in excess of £100 for the upgrade.

SLI has been iffy for a long while. Multi GPU isn't what it used to be. I wouldn't even consider a second 1070.

A 1080ti is probably the only thing that will offer a significant upgrade but it's bloody pricey even after selling your 1070.

Yes, it does and I'm 99% sure its enabled however, I've never seen my CPU report anything other than 3.6Ghz via BIOS or CPU-z or whatever so I think the chip fundamentally ignores any attempt to make it faster.

It is probable however that I'm doing something wrong with the configuration of it mind you! :o :D

A bit reticent to go with SLI given its current state, however, it used to rock along beautifully with my old 580's which I only upgraded from ~2 years ish back, especially with Battlefield 4 & latterly GTA-V its now a non starter from what I read, along with a 1080ti which don't get me wrong, I can afford - just - but simply cannot justify.

Not worth it unless you can do it cheaply.

I agree with you on the video cards, so overpriced these days.

I went for a 1070 despite being able to afford higher end. I just can't justify it.
