Stupid questions about i5 8400

1. Is it unlocked? (i know its not a k)

3. Is it worth upgrading from 4770k specificlally as i play 1440p upto 165 FPS on a 1080 ti? - i know i'll need DDR4 + mobo + cpu.

I still don't think it's worth upgrading yet, since games arent really taking advantage of more than 4 cores yet. You've still got life in your 4770K, so I wouldn't bother upgrading yet. The money would make more of a difference going towards a new GPU or something

4C/8T at 4.4ghz+
to
6C/6T at 4ghz

All be it the latter does have an IPC benefit.

Don't you need something that is clocked really high for 1080p and high framerates? 7700K or 8600K overclocked.

1. No, it's a locked CPU, only the ones ending in K are unlocked.
2. It's a locked CPU with 65W TDP, shouldn't be an issue with any Z370 motherboard.
3. Not really much of an upgrade, an 8700(K) would probably be more of an upgrade if you're really itching for one. But that 4770K should still be fine for 1-2 more generations even with a 1080Ti.

I really don't know, but it would make sense what you say. I'm thinking of getting a noctua d15 for the 4770k to keep temps down and put more voltage to try and get it to 4.5 @ 1.3v my evo 212 = 85c in prime 95 v26. @ 1.27v

You will get zero framerate benefits from coffee lake. It's not worth it for gamers. Increase the clocks on your haswell i7 if possible and keep it for now.
