Women who wear ties ?

Ties, like togas in Ancient Rome, are an article of dress that has no practical use and gets in the way of doing anything practical. They serve the function, sartorially speaking, of saying you don't have to do manual labour / that you have people to do such things. I.e. they're a symbol of being one of those in charge. They also have a history of being used as showing you're part of a group. A school, university. They may have originated amongst soldiers to show who was on what side. So they're worn to show social elevation and sometimes group membership.

As to women wearing them, historically we've been excluded from the Old Boy's Club networks that loved them so much. So there's that. It's just one of those things that is traditionally male. I actually used to wear a tie but it was back after graduation when you enjoy being quirky rather than later years when you just get seen as odd. I think they look quite good actually, but they're obviously very mannish. If you're butch then they just make you look like you want to be seen and treated as a bloke. If you're a pixie, then it can look pretty fetching because it juxtaposes your femininity thus underscoring it. Like nearly everything in women's fashion, it depends how old you are as to whether you can get away with it. :(

There could be other reasons women don't wear ties, of course. :rolleyes:

You do know why Woman's clothing traditionally buttons over the other way to Mens..? ;)
