Vegas incident V Somali incident...

A few weeks ago a thread was created here about the Vegas incident. It went to over 50 pages (most of which was discussion about the weapons used)

Yet after an incident where far more people died in a huge bomb blast (230 lives lost), there is little to no coverage. Even the front page of the BBC website only covers what happened in Somalia at the bottom of the page.

In your opinion, why do we treat these two acts of terrorism in totally different ways?

The far left who control practically all of the western media can't use the Somalia incident to attack the US 2nd amendment.

I did a thread on this a while back. Mostly comes down to being culturally closer to the US than to the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

It's closer to home as they say, so naturally it's more concerning and relatable.

That said, for some (a particular few), it makes it easier to spout nonsense about Islam/Muslims being against the Western way otherwise it complicates matters when most terrorist victims are Muslims/etc.

I get a big kick out of seeing YouTube videos of various navy boats allegedly blasting Somali pirates out of the water. I have had bad experiences with Somalis here in the UK, and they seem to be similarly troublesome interacting even with their own in Somalia. They have a history of murderous piracy against westerners' craft, and a history of extreme violence to one another. So if a few get blown up it is unlikely to ruin my day. Some may well be thinking of terming me a racist, but I again say, yes, I am a racist, but I define it as one who, through life experiences, prefers some races to others, this being a strong case in point.

The mass shooting of innocents for as yet no apparent reason whatsoever, in the land of our closest military ally is a different matter, I haven't had the same extraordinarily negative interaction with Americans as I have with Somalis, and there is no civil war going on in the US, and they aren't committing ongoing high sea piracy against westerners, so their deaths have profoundly different effects on me. If you asked 100 randomly selected people to pinpoint Somalia on a world map I reckon less than 25% could manage it. I would hope at least 90% could find the USA.

The lack of BBC coverage suggests the BBC do not see many Somali sympathisers or those with a great deal of interest in the country amongst their target audience. Similarly the members of the OCUK forum apparently have little interest in Somalia or these people's demise.

The far left control the media? Rupert Murdoch is far left?

Are you trying to say stupid things or does it just come naturally?

Somalia is still in the middle of a civil war that started n the 80's. Things like this, sadly, are common and part of that.

As mentioned above it is group identity. I consider Americans, Europeans and others from the "West" to be my neighbours. I'm not interested in their plight than others. That doesn't mean I'm not interested. But just that people are naturally inclined to be more sympathetic to their group.

Potentially frequency of attacks is a big part of it. I'm travelling to Mogadishu in about a months time, although re-assessing this at the minute, and am subscribed to several security incident reporting services. There are much smaller grenade attacks happening in the city usually every couple of weeks.

There's something incredibly odd about this attack though in that Al-Shabab have not taken credit, they usually do it within a matter of hours. There's also questions about whether they'd even have the resources to put this together, the truck cleared several security checkpoints without arousing suspicion.

I fail to see how my lack of discussing any topic on OC gives any indication of feelings on any matter. Racist or not, it is your complete lack of humanity that shines through Chris. I have bad experinces with many people but I have never let that tar an entire group negatively, otherwise my fellow White Brits would be way down the list.

Because we regard the US as some kind of extension of ourselves, whereas in actuality they know very little about us and care even less.

Observer, Mirror, BBC, Channel ("**** the tories" John Snow) 4...
The Observer is the Guardian on Sunday. The BBC must be fairly centrist given that lefties moan about it being right wing and vice versa. The Mirror and Channel 4 I'll grant you.

Lulz what??!!!?? Seriously what are you smoking?? I’d like to get on some of that crack lol.

Anyhow not sure why there isn’t much coverage, I’d say because it didn’t happen here it won’t sell enough papers or viewing figures.

Honestly mate don’t bother engaging in a debate with him, not worth the time or effort. You could present all the facts in the world to him but he will still shove his head in the sand and believe what he believes.

Admirable?? Maybe?? I have no problem with someone sticking to their views but when hard evidence is shown and proves them wrong then that’s where I find it amusing that people of his ilk still won’t change their views v

When I have some good experiences with Somalis over here I may re-think my views, but as finding any in Whitchurch is unlikely I will have to base my prejudices on experiences of them in Manchester. Crime statistics, which do not share my human emotions, seem to support my peccadilloes though.
