Stop offering your seat to elderly people on public transport, advise health experts

True.

And what underlying theme? Don’t hold old people up on a pedestal while constantly blaming young people for everything? :p
The general feeling I am picking up is how easy/lucky the older generation are, how unfair/wrong this is etc, etc

Still, being elderly/pregnant/stereotype of weakness is not always the case of more worthy of a seat.

I've variously been so crippled with illness that sitting was but a small reduction of significant pain and been standing, ignoring available seats while waiting for hours because I was feeling in good health and spirits. Still the same person.

The article is trying to be far more provocative than that and I'm not on board with that kind of stirring.

We absolutely should keep letting old folks sit on buses, if we can make public transport as pleasant as possible for them it'll mean less of them at the wheel weaving all over the road at 13mph

Note, not entirely serious

Make them walk everywhere to induce more heart attacks, free up the housing market because they aren't being held onto by wrinklies into their 90s. Side effect also reduces the number of old people in supermarkets at the weekends (When they have all god damn week to do their shopping), everyone wins.

Aside from the wrinklies.

But they were going to die soon anyway.

Leaves more space for the young maniac idiot drivers and fat mothers with 5 kids in people carriers who park anywhere they like outside schools.

Haven't used a bus in close to 15 years but I do agree with the point. It pains me to see old people in mobility scooters as they are taking years off their life in the process. My Grandfather used to walk 5 miles to a pub he liked. Have a couple of pints and walk back again. He lived to the grand old age of 93 and was always active.

The problem will never be solved by not letting the elderly a place to sit on public transportation as it is rather up to the elderly to decide for themselves to decide what they need; this is not to say all elderly will make what would be the right choice. I gather most of you have no idea what it is like to work most of your active adult life and it is unfortunate that regardless of how careful you are in your life that accidents, etc happen and though you may never intend to be in a position where you must rely on others to be understanding (just a bit), it does happen and it would be nice to know that if one needed a place to sit that somebody not having health issues just might be nice enough to give up their place.

If an oldie asks me for a seat on the Tube my answer is always something to the tune of "I'll give you a seat when you give me cheap housing, free further education, a job for life and a final salary pension". ;)

How is this thread even still going haha.

Is it ironic that the people most outraged by the headline will be the ones who are likely to remember this article as they grow older and therefore try to stay a bit more active?

I've started asking how they voted in the Brexit referendum. If they voted remain, they can have my seat.

Well buses are full of poor people so most will have voted out*

In all seriousness though, i don't know how people can be so generally bitter after reading this article, be it to old people, young people or people of specific political leaning

Oh man, the amount of completely pointless nonsense articles published on mainstream media is simply unbelievable. And the most annoying thing is the more BS they publish the more money they make.

So what about the younger people who GET UP to offer their seat.

Absolutely NO factors have been considered, and this is a complete FAKE article.

How much has the old person walked to even GET to the bus stop?
How much will the old person have to walk once they alight at their stop?
Has the old person been walking around for 2 hours at the shopping centre?

How on earth can you simply ignore ALL other factors which define any person's daily physical activity and simply say "STOP OFFERING YOUR SEAT TO ELDERLY PEOPLE"??? It beggars belief.

So you agree then, it’s not about age per-se, rather need due to health.

Just because someone has grey hair doesn’t mean they need a seat, and that healthy looking 20 something may need to sit down because otherwise they may end up falling down or vomiting.

Even the sensationalist article headline doesn’t contradict that.

I had an older gentleman snap at me the other day for offering my seat to him on the tram. Clearly makes some of them feel lesser as well. Regardless still will offer it to them even if sometimes I have to shout to get them to hear me.

It’s just courtesy. I don’t need the seat but they may need it. People that just sit an refuse to offer bug me.
