Absolutely, 100% do your research on replacing the vehicle, ideally from a dealer, like for like. The insurance company will likely low-ball you to begin with so look through Autotrader and anywhere else you can find for a similar car and it's value. You're entitled to be placed back into the position you were in before the accident. In other words a similar, if not nigh on identical car in spec, condition and mileage.

Having wrote my A5 (3.0 TDI S-Line) last Tuesday and going through the valuation / settlement process I would suggest :

Spend some time trawling the usual car sales websites but also specialist forum sales threads
Save links for cars of same model, trim, age / plate and miles (although ~15% leeway on milage should be ok)
See what Parkers, Glass Guide etc book price is
Don't accept their first offer if it's not what you consider (and can demonstrate) is a fair value
Ask to speak to the valuer and ask where their examples are from and advise you can provide your own

My valuer spent an hour on auto trader and said he couldn't find a comparable example so took a free valuation average of Parkers etc book price

I spent two hours trawling many sites and gave 5 examples of a higher value (3 were well off miles wise but the rest of the car was pretty spot on) two were "close enough"

They upped their valuation by over £1500

Good luck :)

Thank you I've being doing the same in york cannot find the same spec for less then £5,000

Don't use or let them use "book" price. It means nothing to you unless you can actually purchase a car at "book" price.

Go buy the price on the market.

Yes, sorry, that was my point - as they couldn't find any (allegedly) they used the book price

I looked myself at the book price to compare against what I found (a fair bit lower obviously)

I had to do a lot of digging as, in my case, comparable examples are like hen's teeth
