Good afternoon,

My delightful son has been playing with the power button on my PC, constantly switching it on and off :). Its finally given up. I havent spent much time trying to work out whats gone on it yet, but looking to take this opportunity to upgrade a little!

Current setup is:
i5 - 3570K 3.4GHz
Gigabyte Z77-D3H
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile (2x4GB)
Palit GeFord GTX 970 4096MB

I'm thinking of the below:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £569.92
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Will a 500W Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular be suitable for this?

Cheers Chris

Ryzen 1600 performs the same as 1700 in gaming most of the time unless our streaming and both OC the same- also ryzen is highly effected by ram speed, stick that ram in and you'll be under performing a lot! and it cost a lot too! this is the 16GB ram kit we recommend on here with this board as it works! and 3000-3200hz is the sweet spot for gaming

also, you sure the PC is dead? pretty sure you'll get a lot of mentions of upgrading to a second hand i7 version and GPU upgrade will be best bang for buck If the board is still working!
Gtx 1060 or if your have a 1440p, gtx 1070 will do nicely and perform better then the 970 - not to say its a poor card though

if you fancy new and dont have the time to play around with your old rig- go for it - if you can get it working though, slap in i7 for a bit more life and see what others say about the GPU situation

Pepper spray. Little spritz every time they do something you don't like and they will never do it again, this includes, but is not limited to pooping.

*don't actually do this :p

Most motherboards allow the power button to only work if held for several seconds. Furthermore you can unplug the power button entirely and sometimes use the mouse to turn the PC on or something.

This would certainly be an upgrade compared to what you had. Might want to invest in a new case with a power button that isn't too obvious to the observer, lest this catastrophe happen again.

My uncle's son killed his computer the same way in the late 80s. It was a 386.

No christmas present for you son, you damaged my computer.

And stick to it.

On thing you might consider is a secret switch. Look for a "DESKTOP PC POWER SWITCH". They replace the existing case switch with a remote that you can place out of reach of small button-pushing monsters. :D They cost ~ £10.

Like it, however, I like to go with the habenero tabasco being left on my fingers, "by accident" and holding his dummy (this is a joke for the record :p)

Back to subject, had a play last night. Computer will work without graphics card plugged in, either port. Will try another graphics card tonight to see if its the card of the port! Might tell the Mrs its the motherboard and still go for the upgrade

edit - yes going to relocate the power button

Good evening. Looks like the graphics card is fried and motherboard damaged. Put in another graphics card and the computer is not running right at all. Very laggy and freezes a lot, massive difference compared to not running a card

Just noticed that the recommended mother board is a micro atx, is this an issue if i can fit in a normal atx?

What is your case? If it's a MATX case, then no, you cannot fit a ATX board as the board is bigger than the case.

But if you have a ATX case, MATX board, you can fit either MATX board or ATX board as the case is bigger than both, and have screw holes for both sizes.

Its a Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case and already has an ATX board in

Was going to suggest getting a new case and plugging everything into that on the assumption that the button may be the issue. Just checked back and it seems the faults lies a lot deeper. Sorry for your loss. :-)

All these people suggesting cruelty to children by throwing chillies and peppers onto their fingers are sick individuals. That is really not far from torture. What not waterboard them whilst you are at it!

It is all about education and teaching them not to touch certain things like electrical appliances or ovens etc because they can be dangerous. The easiest way to educate a child not to touch a power button is to wire it up to a 12v car battery that closes the circuit whenever the button is depressed. Direct cause and immediate effect = education. Surely, in a modern society, education over torture everytime. :p

This may be a stab in the dark, but you dont sound like a parent. Mild form of torture is the only excitement left in parenting!
