£500(ish) new build

question is @GhostZapper , how much photography do you do, as well as have you got camera to include RAW image as well ?
image plus RAW image is 16 MB +64.9 MB give or take is able to store 3000 images on a 250GB space

food for thought , I only use 1GB a year taking snap shots of PC builds lol so SSD would be nice, but have 2TB worth of game storage and my music collection wouldnt fit in a 250GB drive - but most people are using streaming now

will solve your SSD vs HDD issue above

He said he has a 20GB HDD. He's not going to fill a 250GB drive on the first day.

3000 images is nothing. I'm not seriously into photography but my personal collection has over 5000 photos...
If he practices the hobby, maybe 30,000 images...

Just depends on how much photos they take , to what standard, to what editing . External drive could be a perfect solution if SSD can go in .
My wife can fill 64GB stick on one outing , not that 64GB goes into her Mac, just depends on the snapper , what they think is good to worth the editing and then what actually is kept :)

But I do have 90GB of WhatsApp photos stuck on my drive... Need to major spring cleaning haha - kids :D

The problems with SSDs is their high price. And that it isn't the smartest solution to use them as a storage for file types :D

Again depends one what your storing , I have large files of BP platforms that take half an hour to load and each are 10GB in save . I lose that time every day in work , well I make tea.
An SSD personal should always be used to house the SSD , but budget is a budget hopefully OP can stretch a little

Oh, that has to be a slow processor....... It won't take 30 minutes for a 10GB file to be transfered from HDD to RAM, even if that transfer is 200 MB/s.

i5 and i7 3rd gens, File size plays a big part but also coding, BP cheaped out... some googling and you'll find half a dozen games that have had patches to cut load times ;)

Oh you haven't ordered yet so just to make sure you're aware: that board only has two DIMM slots, so no further RAM can be added, only replaced. If that's cool with you, no probs.

I trust that the above package comes with all the cables with the components, and there isn't anything I would need to buy in addition....
Does thermal paste tend to come with the CPU, or do I need to buy that separately as well?
