Hi all, As title just got my first gaming pc a month or two back. I’ve always been on Xbox but always wanted to get into pc gaming. So I had a bit of spare cash and wanted to start somewhere so I went and picked up This pc.

The spec is:
• AMD FX8350.
• MSI Nvidia 770 (now running 970).
• Corsair vengeance 8GB ram DDR3.
• W/D blue hard drive 1TB.
• MSI 970 Motherboard.
• Windows 7 pro.
• Qualcomm Atheros AR938x wireless adaptor.
• Samsung black 18x DVD-ROM
• 750w Corsair CS750m hybrid modular, 80 plus gold power supply.
• Cooler Master case.

My Upgrades.
• Corsair H80i water cooler
• MSI GTX 970 graphic card.

Looking at hopefully upgrading the motherboard & cpu next but not quite sure where to go next, what’s the best cpu & motherboard combo for gaming?? Stay with AMD or switch to Intel??

Any suggestions or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

This is going to be a difficult one for you to swallow but your gaming PC was missold. Very old tech and I don't think very gaming orientated.

Any upgrade, whether Intel or AMD, to the latest chipsets will also require DDR4 RAM automatically adding £80-£120 to the price for 8GB.

The only way to retain your RAM is with a Sandybridge or Ivy bridge build otherwise you will need DDR4 to get any of the older Intel CPUS from Haswell onwards to the latest Coffee Lake or the AMD Ryzen CPU's

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

To add to this, if you are prepared to buy the new RAM, a Kabylake G46xx series will probably be a good upgrade for pure gaming allowing an upgrade to a 7600k but an AMD Ryzen 1400/1500 will offer more longevity and not leave you with a limited upgrade path.

Haswell uses DDR3 Ram.

Yeah, Ryzen 1600 is a very capable processor, should see huge improvements in fps, plus it's a good overclocker too.

Ryzen 1600 is obviously a better option than the 1400 or 1500 but OP hasn't given a budget so that was the cheapest option bearing in mind that he only bought this system no more than two months ago.

If it is for pure gaming, i3 8350k or for more money i5 8400 will be a lot better. It depends on budget.

Being honest I would just keep with what you have for now... Maybe a mild overclock on both cpu and motherboard.

I have just ordered a ryzen 1600 and will be coming from an 8350. As others have said the 8350 is old tech now and it wasn't too great when it first came out. I regret going for this over the i5's on release.

Your system now is still capable of playing the newest games at medium/high settings.

I would enjoy what you have got, see if you really get into PC gaming and then maybe wait till next year for the Ryzen refresh and hoping for memory and graphic cards to come down in price.

Seems a massive waste to have bought the pc and then having to change only after a few months. At least get another 6 months from it!

Hi all thanks for all the replies, I should have around the £600 mark maybe a bit more for cpu, motherboard & ram. It will be used for pure gaming. So say I buy a ryzen 1600 what motherboard would i want to go with that cpu?? I’m just abit confused what cpu goes with what motherboard.
Thanks

asus rog strix b350-f gaming is a good board at around £117 the the dark pro ddr4 ram pc4-25600c14 3200mhz @ £199 is good buy too. Then if needed add an updated graphics card or even a m2 ssd.

Stunning ram, try and get the timings down for more performance - one of the 2 most common recommend boards along with the Strix up top^^^
ryzen 1600 which can be overclocked to 3.9Ghz on AIO or 3.7Ghz with stock cooler

intel would have edge gaming wise, ryzen is wallet friendly - that ram should hit 4000hz

I think it's a bit wrong to describe anything in the Ryzen line up as a good overclocker. Sure if we're being pedantic then the percentage that the 1700 can clock for example ends up near 30%, but we're running all around low clocks.

I'd personally see the OP keep his system as is for now.

Thanks again for the replies, I don’t mind holding out a little to see what comes outs. I know it’s outdated tech but I really brought it as a project to build up into a more modern gaming pc (with the help from you guys lol). Thanks @orbitalwalsh that helps out a lot & everyone else :)

Normally I link videos etc, but in some cases, changing from your core to say Ryzen 1600 gave gains without touching the GPU, mainly on 1080p .
Take 5 mines of your time to YouTube fx8350 Vs Ryzen 1600 and you'll see, pictures speak a thousand words

I went from the 8350, held off buying a 1070 now as the boost in games with the 1600 and overclocking the 980 is amazing. Ultra settings and buttery smooth game play in BF1.

Cinebench score is just over double now on the 1600 vs 8350.
