Hi,

I bought the Galaxy S8 from Amazon Germany for €550 (£510) which is around £80-90 cheaper than buying in the UK however the phone has developed a fault and I want to return it back to Amazon as I'm within the 30 days however the women at the post office said lithium batteries are prohibited so I looked on Royal Mail's International restricted goods page and it says "Lithium ion/polymer/metal/alloy batteries when sent contained in equipment such as a mobile phone or digital camera are allowed." so I'm going to try a different post office on Monday but if they refuse it as well, which courier will allow me to send it to Germany?

Thanks

As long as the battery is fitted they can't refuse it. They tried it once with me but I'd downloaded the guidance sheet from their website and they grudgingly admitted they were wrong.

Yeah I've phones through royal mail and they've never said that it's a problem. Having said that, have you tried contacting amazon first to see if they can sort something out for you?

Surely you just request a return via Amazon they then give you a returns label. This should still work with different county's Amazon's.
Andi.

Post office counter staff are not really to blame as the Post Office rules and regulations can be ambiguous at best, some say batteries are not allowed for any reason even when you show them that yes they provided they are contained within the equipment.

I had a cable to send yesterday and took the packaged item into the PO and the guy behind the counter asked what was in the package as ususal I said nothing prohibited to which he replied rather gruffly that he needed to know exactly. So i told him it was a PSU, PCI-E cable and asked if he was any the wiser? He said it did not matter that he did not know which left me totally baffled.

I've used DHL to send a phone abroad but it wasn't cheap.

Also lady at your Post Office was tripping, phones are fine according to their own website.
She probably doesn't know the difference between lithium and lithium-ion batteries as lithium are prohibited whereas the latter isn't.

The battery is non-removable and I'm going to download the guidance sheet on my phone in case they refuse it again.

Under the new consumer contract the seller has to provide you with a returns address in your own country or pay for the return themselves.

Surely you just request a return via Amazon they then give you a returns label. This should still work with different county's Amazon's.

The phone was sold by third party seller but fulfilled by Amazon and on the returns page, the only option was for me to send it and Amazon will refund the postage cost.

I will contact Amazon tomorrow if the post office refuse it again.

To be sure use someone like dhl, or use a cheaper option.
DHL allows to send phone with battery inside?

I work for UPS and we handle thousands of phones every day . As long as they are clearly labeled that they have a battery inside they will be fine.

Amazon are not above the law, get onto them and ask for a UK return address or a prepaid label.

Is that just putting a lithium-ion batteries sticker on the outside of the parcel?

Yes all items with batteries have to have a sticker . Like i said we handle thousands every day and at launch day for apple we could have upto 10 thousand in a single shipment.

What the **** is going on at Tamworth? they've managed to lose two of my parcels over the last month (refunded by seller) and now today "We've incorrectly sorted this package which may cause a delay" - me thinks someone needs firing. Dunno if they just hate me or a wider issue but its starting to look a bit shambolic.

EDIT: Not meant to be aggressive in case it came off that way - I order a fair bit from Farnell who use UPS and the last month has seen a marked drop in the level of service whenever anything hits Tamworth compared to normal.
