Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I don't 100% know the answer to whether you can plug a random Virgin box into their cable network and get basic channels.

What you will have is a coax connection from somewhere (call it point A) in the house to the bedroom. If point A happens to be within reach of a standard antenna connection you've got an easy way to get Freeview to the bedroom.

I'm going to pick up a VM package at some point soon so I've been reviewing the options available to me. All good until I noticed the small print that states the Hub needs to be next to or within ethernet cable range of the TV box. This is a problem for me as currently I have my BT modem/ router in my study which is nowhere near the lounge and TV. Will the VM TV box work OK via powerline connections? Or do Virgin insist on the hub being directly connected the TV box?

Any connection will do. It even has wi-fi, but they don't mention that much because they don't want to have to talk customers through setting it up. Mine runs through two hubs and a router via ethernet before it gets to the Superhub.

I have just come to the end of my first year with virgin media,I have got 2 boxes and with the new contract the bedroom one is going,in the past they let you keep the box and you can watch normal TV ect but they want the box back,if I buy another box will the signal still be there to watch channels ?

If the boxes are the old models the chances of VM acctually collecting them are slim as they are no use to them seeing as VM are trying to get everyone cardless.

I had 1 of the bedroom boxes replaced last year (Samsung v+) for a Tivo and was told to take the V+ box to the local recycle centre. Still have another VHD box in another bedroom which VM say doesn't need replacing yet.

ALso are you sure that you will get all Freeview channels? (SD only) ... I beleive even freeview channels VM encrypts these apart from BBC1,2,ITV,Chan4,Chan5? ... my VU+ box only picked up these channels.

Virgin came today to install my cable and get me running but they said there was a blockage in the way of the junction box which they can't clear!

I've now got to wait for that to be cleared then they'll book another engineer!

Not a happy bunny at the moment.

What is your average usage for broadband, I just phone to try and get a better deal. Stating I rarely use TV or landline.

The lady stated I use around 300gb per month? Sound high?

Been with them for 10+ years

Best deal for everything is

  • New contract
  • 100 BB
  • TV
  • Phone
  • £42.99 month
Best deal for BB only is
  • 100 BB
  • £34 per month

If it's cheaper than the website then take it. Everything the offered me was at least £10pm more expensive than the site! I asked if it was cheaper to come back as a new customer and they said yes as long as I have a different name...

I know how you feel. I ordered in July with an August install date arranged. Then there was a problem with my local council dragging their heels over giving Virgin permission to dig up the street next to my drive way. Literally a 4ft stretch.

I finally got it installed this week, 3 months after I ordered. It was worth the wait though. 220mbps internet and the latest V6 set top box, which is a huge improvement over BT's Youview box.

We average 800GB a month, but have peaked at 1.2TB. It comes up whenever they look at my account, although it's always just a casual comment at my usage and they normally say it's high, but not the highest they've ever seen.
