Ok my wifes friend has to go away for a few days and we said we can look after her 5 month old Rotty. I have a Lab (7yo) and nearly 3 year old child. They all get on which is good. No issue there, However, we do have a big wee wee issue.

Friend told us she is house trained and crate trained, thats the main reason we took on this favour for her. Only after her bringing the puppy to us she told us she lets her out every 30-45 minutes for toilet break. When I was told this I thought to myself, thats a lot of going out side at that age. It's nigh on impossible to let her out at these very short intervals. We have been letting her out as much as we can and she does her wees but literally 20 mins later she wees in the house. We put her in her crate to rest and chill, give our lad a bit of play time without worrying about the puppy knocking him over and she wees in there. She has had only a small amount of water this morning, I guess a pint so far and the wee is constant.

We were told she, on command, Sits, rolls over, gives paw, plays dead etc, I am thinking she should have spent more time on the puppys bladder control. I/we are wishing we never agreed to take on this favour now. but hey ho. I don't think the friend has been letting the dog out for toilet after the 3 main events, after waking up from a nap or sleep, after play time and also after eating. Letting her out every bloody 30 mins or so is not going to train her properly. Unless Rottys are crap at bladder control?, Never had one so wouldn't know.

She jumps up all the time and with my wife half way into our second pregnancy I am very concerned about this jumping. Wifes friend is all this and that, saying shes obedient, on proper food, goes all night without messing in her cage etc, but I am finding the opposite. Don't get me wrong she is a nice dog but I am worried she wont be trained properly and not being my dog I am certainly not going out of my way to train her in the few days we have.

She also chews. Oh shes a chewer we are told. Great, so why didnt you start from day dot and stick a toy she is allowed to chew in her gob instead of just telling her to stop.

The two Labs I have had from puppys stopped chewing after a few weeks of having them, house trained within the 4 weeks of having them and also bladder controlled for up to 12 hours. My lab now can go ages without needing a wee.

A bit of a rant I know and regretting the puppy sitting but can't do anything until monday.

Any more advice?

Edit: I would like to add the puppy knows us and the house as she has been here before so we could all be introduced etc,

I knew a reply like that would crop up.. :) Ill get some as soon as she comes in from out side. Had to let her out to make sure she empties her bladder before coming in as I am going to start to clean the house and cant leave her out side with me watching her. (too many things for her to eat out there. :p)

Don’t leave a roast dinner unattended!

When I was a kid my mum bred two rotties. The litter was sold off and when the last one was left, she felt sorry for it and let it upstairs into the living area. A couple days later, Mum brought in my dads roast dinner. He turned his back for a second to get the paper and when he turned back the puppy had inhaled the lot :D

At the end othe day it's a puppy in an alien environment, all training generally goes out the window in those situations.

Coffee....everywhere! :D

If it pees in a smallish crate it probably has a water infection, most dogs won't soil a confined space unless they can't help it. It also sounds like it may be drinking excessively. Is it insured? Will the friend cough up vets fees if you take it to one? Is it the photo or is it really cross eyed? :)

She sleeps in what I would call a medium to large crate. We have just got back from being out and were gone for 3 hours, tested her blanket and she may have did a small wee but literally a few seconds before I left the house earlier she weed on the dining room floor after weeing and being out with my dog for 30 mins or so in the garden. Not sure on insurance I hope she is though. She only had a small bowl of water today. it's been out for her all day so it's not like I am not letting her have any. No shes not cross eyed lol.
