It’s after midnight and my next door neighbour decides to start doing late night DIY. Me and my gf are trying to sleep but all you can hear is hammering, sawing and annoying sounds vibrate through the whole house. He is trying to be quite but the noise is just to hard prevent.

I knock on his door but get no response so I decide to ring the bell. He opens the door and replies rather ubruptly “I will stop” followed by closing the door without even an apology. I barley got a chance to say 1 word. I return to my house and I can start to hear his child through the wall cry. I’m guessing it was from the sound of me ringing the bell.

Why am I the one feeling guilty? Would you have done the same in my situation?

I would have done the same thing to be honest, if you life in an attached or semi detatched house you have to be at least a little bit considerate of your neigbours, and banging and sawing etc at gone midnight is completely ridiculous...

Depends - normally quiet neighbour I'd probably put up with it in the hope it was a one off emergency rather than them being inconsiderate.

What kind of emergency requires banging and sawing? :p

I can understand a late night banging emergency but not sawing  :D

Must confess to doing something like this myself on one occasion.:p

About 15 years ago, came home from pub, Night was suddenly frosty and I wanted to light a fire (No central heating, old house)

Unfortunately I was out of wood so I went outside to cut some,

At this point a neighbor came out and asked me what I was doing. In true "Spectrum" form I simply stated that I needed firewood because I was cold. (I think I possibly also gave him the sort of look that might have suggested that confronting a drunk guy with a chainsaw who was on a mission might actually not be in his best interests as well).

No more was said on the matter.

The neighbor moved away shorty after....:p

Ok not the response I was looking for but I should expect nothing less from this forum :D

I think the answer he gave you tells you all you need to know.
He knew he was potentially keeping you awake, and he stopped.
His words mean he was aware what he was doing wasn't on, you didn't even have to say.
Just odd that the child didn't wake to his noises but woke to the bell.

Careful.

I once went round to give my neighbour a telling off for hammering after midnight and ended up helping him fit his kitchen, turns out he'd promised his wife it'd be done by the time she got back!

Still he had beer so not exactly a hardship :)

Clearly come home to find his wife doing the nasty, lost his rag and now he's doing a spot of coffin prep before Trevor Jordacheing (there's a cultural reference for the kids) the guy beneath his patio.

Would you have done the same in my situation?

I would've hacked through his door with an axe and announced my presence and name.

Best regards,

Johnny.

Although seriously, you shouldn't feel guilty, as others have said he was clearly aware he might be keeping people up. In the same situation I would've probably just put up with it as I would be too lazy to get out of bed, providing it's not something that occurs regularly.
