I want a cheap as chips no feature switch for my new home office...

Id maybe like the option of sticking in a 10gb transceiver (is that the right term) at a later date

low power would be nice as well

any suggestions appreciated... to any experts how can i tell what transceiver will work in which switch? is there some standard they adhere to or do i need one for that make?

10GBe would require a SFP+ slot and those don't appear on 'cheap as chips' unmanaged switches.

Better to stick with Gigabit for the moment and worry about 10GBe if/when you need it.

Define "Cheap as chips" :
TP-LINK T1700G-28TQ - 24 port with 4x 10 SFP+ ~£260

Dlink have some models similar price, then next step up would be:
Ubiquiti US-48 - 48 Port with 2x SFP+ Layer 2 Managed- ~£440

SFP+ Module is the general term, although depending on your use case e.g. if you need 10Gb direct to a server (which has a 10Gb SFP+ card) then you can buy a Direct Attach Cable (DAC) that basically is a cable with SFP+ connectors hardwired to the end.

SFP+ *should* be standards compliant, in reality though some of the bigger manufacturers (mainly HP & Cisco) lock out third party modules via their firmware, and so require you to buy their own modules. At the cheaper end of the market I haven't yet come across this (with Netgear, DLink, Ubiquiti), and they accept modules from any manufacturer.

I'm somewhat surprised that these switches with SFP+ ports are cheaper than standard copper 10GbE switches - the cheapest unmanaged switch I can find with 8 2.5/5/10 GbE ports is nearly £500!
