I can remember 1997 and it was common knowledge then that the song was a cover. Maybe you could ask Chris Wilson to search his personal Daily Mail archive to find an article?
 
Indeed, back when the song was released it was quickly established that it was a cover and this was well known by most.
 
The original songwriters were appropriately credited in her album sleeve notes. What's the problem?

Except...... that was terrible.

Anyway; I had no idea. Does it matter? Not really. It's a great cover, unlike Madonna's cover of American Pie. :p
 
I like what you did there. I often refer to her as Mad Donna. :p

Plenty of people seemed to like it, as it got to number one in many countries, but in my opinion, compared to Don McLean's original, it's a pile of crud.
