Thinking of a new car...

How can you be concerned about fuel costs if you have 13/14k to blow on a car? Not to mention you have a car that has 200bhp which is fairly quick I would say 35mpg is pretty good for the ssize and performance.
If your bothered about saving for instance an extra £30 a week in fuel go and buy a generic diesel Golf or Octavia that will get 60mpg but Is it worth being bored to death just to save abit of money on fuel?
Can’t see many A4 size cars returning much more mpg for your budget

Actually it does sound a bit like that 2.0TFsi was a bit thirsty
Fuel consumption (economy) - urban 7.8 l/100 km
Fuel consumption (economy) - extra urban 4.8 l/100 km
Fuel consumption (economy) - combined 5.9 l/100 km

Compared to current model, about 10% more efficient, although slightly down in power as the "normal" TFSi is quite up on power

Fuel consumption (economy) - urban 7.0-7.1 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - extra urban 4.4-4.5 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - combined 5.4-5.5 l/100 km.

2 litre diesel of current is, so 10-40% better again depending on usage, if its extra urban then about 10%
Fuel consumption (economy) - urban 5.1-5.4 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - extra urban 3.8-4.1 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption (economy) - combined 4.3-4.5 l/100 km.

I'm not quite so sure bored to death is fair
Current model 190hp diesel and petrol are a staggering 0.7 secs diff on 0-60

But agree its a more performance orientated tune for that car and its not small so its not ever going to get 50mpg on a run.

Usually the ‘MPG sucks on my current car’ is an excuse / reason to the household budget holder to justify getting a new car. In reality saving £30 a month on fuel vs the new car depreciation means you’ll be worse off BUT, so long as the budget holder thinks your are financially up then that is all that matters :p

This is exactly why I have a car that dose 25mpg but has done pretty much all its depreciating, also doesn't owe me any money on finance.

OP, I don't think what you want is really possible, unless the golf GTE is an option?

have you considered a retune. All cars are pumped out of the factory on the same fuel maps. getting a professional setup based on your everyday needs could see an increase on mph. Increased power doesn't necessarily mean increased fuel usage

I have the 2.0 TFSI (211PS version), if I drive very carefully on a long motorway run I can hit 35, but thats sitting at 67/68. If I am just cruising and not thinking about it I get 32/33 ish. Around town is a nightmare, I was based in York and I'd average 18/19mpg around town because of the traffic/lights etc.

That really does seem low given that it's essentially the same engine as in my Octavia and I'm averaging considerably better MPG than yourself in both the stop and start, and long run styles of driving. When did you last have it serviced? Do you check your tyre pressures reguarely? Have you tried simply driving a little more economially? You really should be getting almost 40 on long motorway runs.

I meant if you want noticeably improved mpg you are going to have to downgrade in terms of power and bhp even if your buying a diesel

This seems a bit of a bizarre view. Why should somebody pay no regard to the ongoing costs of a car simply because the budget is set at a certain amount?
Because for what op wants even if he switches to a diesel with decent power once driven enthusiastically and in stop start traffic they don’t normally hit the stated mpg. So let’s say he get’s 50mpg from buying another car he’s only getting an extra 15 maybe 20mpg over his current car. Now when you have 13/14k to spend I doubt he’s really in a position to need or has to make financial sacrifices just to gain an extra 20mpg which wouldn’t amount to much of a saving.
If it was someone that’s driving a VXR8 or similar and only getting 20mpg on a good day and they now have to commute a greater distance therefore looking at a 60mpg diesel hatchback to save thousands per year in fuel then yes that is worth it.

You can get faster diesels that do 50+mpg on motorway runs.
That A4 does look a little poor on economy but then the book figures are hardly great.

How about A4 3.0 TDI Quattro S tronic, 0-60 6.3s, combined mpg 61, bhp 218, better on every count
Not in the OPs budget (new) but the cars exist, could be similar in a few year old model, I never really followed the A4 so don't know what they made historically

Hi all,

I am finding myself doing a lot more driving than I was expecting (mostly for work, but a lot of leisure too) and finding that my current 2011 TFSI A4 is a bit thirsty.

So I have been thinking of swapping it in for something a bit more economical, but not 100% sure where to start, as I have a fairly picky list of requirements. It would be grand if you wouldn't mind me picking your brains for some recommendations. So, looking at around £13/14k (but can go above if it is worth it), what would fit into these:

Absolute musts:
  • Petrol
  • 45ish+mpg on motorways (I currently get around 31/32)
  • Upgraded sound system
  • Xenons
  • Tech pack (nav/bluetooth etc.
  • Similar power
  • Practical, similar size
Would be great, but not essiential:
  • 4wd
  • Automatic
  • Newer
Again, I have no idea if there is actually something that would fit these or not - feel free to shoot me down if there isnt!

Cheers
forget petrol and consider diesel if you are trying to economise.
on a diesel you can always do a motorway run every so often, that should not be a problem as long as you give it a good blast at 4k/5k rpm

Best way to clear it is to remove it and poison the environment and the general population. :p

Yea and MOT tests are going to changed to pick up removed DPFs. A lot of people are going to have some big bills soon lol

But this is probably a bad time to be looking for old diesels.
