Surely at £199 the i7 7740x is a steal?

Ive managed to save around £1500 and looking to buy a pc for gaming and a light rendering. Ive not seen any i7 cpu for that price and am seriously considering buying this chip. What do you guys reckon? 1440p gsync at 144hz paired with a gtx 1080 / 1080 ti

It is a great price, but when you factor in the motherboard prices it isn't such a great buy. If I was building a PC right now with that budget, I would be going for a 6 or 8 core CPU.

It's also slower than the 7700k because of it's new mesh bus and uses more power.

The 7800X looks better value at £260 - 6C/12T with quad channel RAM support, more PCI-E lanes.

Should i bite the bullet or wait for
Black friday? ...gibbo normally starts it a week early

I'd just wait for the 8700k for your needs tbh, wait for the cheaper motherboards if you wanna save money.

Like he said, I wouldn't buy anything less than 6 cores now.
You have a choice buy 7800x @£260 with more expensive mobo or wait for 8700k availability and get that with cheaper motherboard.

^Although I'd agree with the comments that I'd not buy anything less than 6 cores, the 7740X does not use the MESH topology, it uses a ring bus. In the end it's just a regular Kaby Lake CPU scaled up for the HEDT socket, which is why it only has a dual channel memory controller.

I missed that, good to know.

Its a nice stash of dosh and if you invest gamble it all in bitcoin you could have £2000 by January.:D
but really, light rendering says give me more cores, 6c/6t 8400 or 6/12 , it depends whether your software can make good use of hyperthreading. Ram is hyper expensive atm so 8/16/32 as budget decides...
