Used GPU’s - which would you go for?

I just sold my old GTX 980 with waterblock for £230. I fancy going back to air to keep things simple.

I have the choice of a used 1070 for about £300 or a used 1080 for about £400.

Will be gaming at 3440x1440 60hz.

Which would you guys choose? I’m thinking the 1080 would be nice but wondering if I really need it, and whether or not it’s worth paying an extra £100 considering Volta is only just around the corner.

Cheers

If the monitor doesn't have Gsync then you will likely need the 1080 to be able keep the frame rates above 60 FPS in the newer titles at that resolution. Whether that smoother gameplay experience is worth £100 to you only you can decide...

I was surprised how well GTA V ran with the 980. 60 fps Vsync with a mix of high, ultra and med settings. Looked better than 1080p at ultra and played as smoothly :)

GTAV isn't exactly new but I'm thinking a 1070 would probably do it. I'm trying to figure out whether the added, dare I say it "future proof" performance of the 1080 is really worth it in the long term, or if I should spend the £100 saving on a Corsair AIO lol. I suppose what I really should be looking for is a crystal ball

I'd say 1080 for that res - I run a 1070 at 2560x1440 with G-Sync and it does OK but wouldn't take much more resolution before I'd have to consider turning down settings or upgrading GPU with more recent titles.

At that res a 1080 although a 1080ti would be much better but I guess even second hand one of those will be much more than £400.

I run @ 5760x1080 and at that resolution my single 1070 coped admirably but I had to lower certain settings in games such as GTA V, now I’ve got a second 1070, the performance is fantastic (in games that scale mind you!) and the extra power is certainly night & day noticeable.

Given two 1070’s are on par if not better than a 1080ti in some benchmarks I’ve seen then I’d say at least opt for a 1080 or a 1080ti if funds allow.

a 1070 isn't really going to be that much faster than your old 980, so I would really look to a 1080 or even a 1080Ti.

I've got a Zotac AMP 1070 and a 3440x1440 monitor and the Witcher 3 runs I would say between 50-70 fps and probably more towards 70 during the occassional checks I've done, with most things on ultra (foliage distance: high, hairworks: off, shadows: medium because little difference).

It's enough for me but having said that I'd still probably say go with a 1080 for the bit extra performance.

I was using a 1080 recently with my 3440x1440 and I'd say either will manage because I also managed with a 6gb 1060 for a month or so but if you want it too last as long as possible grab the 1080, I found several game that required a lot of settings to be dropped for me to keep a 40 or above fps experience especially as there's no form of adaptive sync.

Just bought a 1080 FTW :)

ATX or ICX?

I ask as I remember there was an issue with the ACX's cooling and EVGA ended up replacing the ACX cooler with the ICX cooler, They also did these do it yourself kits for the ACX models where you had to add heatsinks or pads to the vrm's. I probably have all the particulars wrong but it was a well documented problem that brought around the demise of the ACX cooler. You should ask if the pad fix has been done and if not look into it more with a view to doing it yourself.

It’s the RMA’d ACX version which already has the bios updated and the thermal pads installed :)
