£1700/£1800 Build

Hi all,

I've been contemplating pulling the trigger and been mixing and matching OC's pre-built specs for the last week. I orginally started spec'in out OC's Chromium i5. And then i very stupidly started to look how/if i could respec the Germanium i7 to fit into my budget.

The overclocked Germanium looks amazing but is definitely overkill for me, and would like your opinions on a spec for gaming (something in between the 2 models) revolved around the following:

i7 8700k 3.7GHz (Coffee Lake) £398.99
Windows 10 £104.99
And also take into account approximately £80 build fee to ensure getting OCs 3 year warranty.

So you basically want an i7 8700k and 1080ti build?

Also what resolution and refresh rate is your monitor?
 
I’m open to everyone’s suggestions, when contacting one of the staff from OC, they suggested the GTX 1080 over the 1080 TI - and advising the money saved can be used elsewhere.

My screen is pretty average, it’s a Samsung 27” resolution is 1920 x 1080, 144 Hz.

Which looks great, but with the OS and build costs, it was more towards the £2000 price. My original budget was £1300-£1500 - and already it’s slowly creeping higher! Thanks
 
if your screen Freesync or G-sync enabled ?
to be honest GTX 1070 would have been fine with your screen or Vega
bit overkill but would last longer or allow to upscale in most games

  • That CPU cooler should be fine for mild overclocks, but anything approaching 5ghz (cpu lottery permitting) would likely need a better cooler.

  • If you shop around you can find much better deals on GTX 1080's and on 8600k.

  • I would recommend the 8700k, but it's out of stock.

  • Have also left room for windows 10 as it can be found cheaper elsewhere.

That is a pretty awful build for the op's needs. Also the cooler doesn't fit in the case.
 
Thanks for the response guys, I think my current screen needs an upgrade to really take advantage of the graphics card, i'm considering digging into my pockets for the Dell G-Sync 2560x1440 144Hz.

At 1440p you would struggle much more to hit 144hz. Achieving high frame-rate is always better than higher resolution in my opinion.

The FPS in a certain game should match the refresh rate of the monitor. Why do you claim there is no need to?

It isn't going to affect gameplay if you get 80 fps or 100fps instead of 144fps. If the op played fps for a living then of course it might be different. Also you are never going to get a constant framerate as you will get dips in certain situations.

If you look at a review for a GTX 1070 you will see that it does very well at 1080p.

I agree that GTX 1070, and also Radeon Vega 56, Radeon Vega 64, GTX 1080 are all quite good cards but the guy has quite high budget and he needs to spend it :D The GTX 1080 Ti is very good because no matter how demanding games will be released, he will still have time like several years to happily use it.
GTX 1070 is okeyish right now, but very soon he will need to replace it ;)
