Sausage tycoon fined for Ferrari parked across two parking places

I initially saw this and thought what an arrogant **** then saw the reasoning and that he'd actually bought and displayed two tickets which seems fair enough. I guess technically he's not within the marking of a single space as perhaps required by the rules/contract he's entered into when paying for the space but he's certainly within the markings of both spaces combined (which he has paid for) and so I think the person giving out the ticket is a bit of a jobsworth here.

A sausage tycoon was left "furious" after he got a £90 ticket for using two parking spaces to park his Ferrari, despite paying for both bays.

Kevin McWhinney said that if he left the £143,000 sports car in just one spot, he would not be able to get into it if two cars parked either side.

He also wanted to avoid damage to his luxury vehicle when he parked it in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Mr McWhinney appealed the fine but it was turned down after officials said the supercar was “not wholly within” the two striped lines in the parking area.

Since GD is full of opinionated people I wondered what your thoughts are?

Also would you change your mind if it was a van driver or a family with a camper van who had to pay for two spaces?

What about someone on a train who has booked/paid for two train tickets because they're traveling with a large musical instrument? Would that change depending on whether they've reserved both seats or simply bought two tickets on an unreserved train and have their instrument taking up the additional space.

(sorry Mods if this is more suitable for motors - I know it involves a car but wasn't sure whether to post in GD or motors as it was the general principle I'm interested in people's thoughts on - please move if this is the wrong forum)

in an absolute first for me I agree with you.
1 ticket he is a very low on the human scale

but as he paid for 2 tickets (that note would be perfectly acceptable for instance for a campervan blocking 2 spaces) he has done nothing wrong and I guarantee he wins his appeal against the ticket.

Not within a single space but if the T&C's say in marked bays then he IS in marked bays. Plus he bought two tickets so they can't claim loss of revenue.

Jobsworth who need retraining

Echoing Domi's post, astonishingly I agree with dowie. He paid for the space of two cars and chose to park one there - that seems reasonable and I'd be surprised if the fine stands. I actually hope he does pursue it because obviously $90 is pretty small beer if you're driving a $140k+ Ferrari.

If the T&Cs say he has to be within the marked bay then it is likely breach of contract. However, if it is a private parking firm then they have incurred no loss from the breach of contract because he purchased two tickets, and so there is no basis for a fine.

well clearly you both don't read my posts much if you only agree with this one but it seems I have a reputation to uphold so I'm going to disagree with you both on this point

while I think the parking people are being jobsworths I wouldn't be surprised if he loses, if they've got a rule that says the vehicle must be parked within the designated bay then he's clearly broken it - there is perhaps an argument from their side that they're not looking to cater for larger vehicles such as say lorries, vans etc.. and that there is a public service aspect to having the car park... perhaps they want to defend their right to only allow one vehicle per bay... take it to an extreme and for some bizarre reason some guy parks up a huge US style camper van and takes over an entire row, that has a knock on effect on other residents

He bought two tickets so I'm on his side.

The guitarist Joe Bonamassa often buys a ticket for Mr Gibson who sits next to him.
Mr Gibson is a guitar.

But he is parked within the designated bays

Isn't the "must be parked within the designated bay" rule to stop people parking at the end of rows etc. Essentially just abandoning vehicles but buying a ticket.

Which of the 2 bays is designated or are they both designated for use in which case he is using them both. I think common sense needs to prevail here.

No problem from me. I often see transit vans that are too long and end up overhanging 2 bays. I’m guessing they don’t bother paying for 2 tickets... whereas this chap clearly thought about that.

Same principle, different orientation. No issue.

If I'd have seen the car parked I'd have been pretty annoyed, but knowing he'd bought two tickets is pretty admirable really but it's a ridiculous fine. As someone mentioned above, the parking company didn't experience any loss from the event so i'm not sure how they can justify the fine.

Meh, still cheaper and more convenient than a scratch. The number of times I park at the back of a car park and get a single car that decides to park along side.

Or when there is a car right on the line meaning you have to do the same yourself. Can only imagine how quickly a ticket inspector would pounce once that car leaves.

Edit: wait, he also bought two tickets. What is the problem then? Crazy world.

Next time buy 3 tickets, stick 2 of them in the spare spaces and park in the middle bay. Surely they can’t object to that.
Nice idea, but would you notice a ticket stuck to the ground in a busy car park? I’m guessing you also haven’t worked in and around a car park before? People will squeeze in to any space they think they can... an empty space is asking for it :p

I’m guessing he blocks two spaces and then gets the tickets.

On the other hand, I had to park in a pay & display parking spot the other day due to requiring a tachograph break, it was a pay by your mobile setup, you gave them the make and reg and you were charged accordingly.

I entered my details and the parking was duly authorised, the automated message acknowledged my HGV, the fact I was ~55 ft long and taking four spaces didn’t seem to matter, I wasn’t offered the option to pay four times, nor would I have done so!
