Anyone else missed their flights?

First time on Friday.. I got caught at the Dartford bridge at 5am Friday morning for over 2 hours.. Missed our flight by half an hour in the end.. In hindsight, we should have booked a hotel but thought travelling this time would carry minimal delay and we allowed 2 hours contingency but hey..

I've watched my flight take off from the departure gate at Stansted, despite constant assurances from airline staff we'd make the flight. Hey ho, managed to get that cost back through credit card company.

I went to New York in May flying from Heathrow. I left loads of time to get there for an early morning flight, but also got caught up in some really bad traffic. My flight was 10.15 and we had to check in by 9.15. We got there at 9.16 and they refused us entry. It then cost us £100 each to move our tickets to the next flight, which was then delayed by 3 and a half hours, so we got £270 compensation back from the airline for it :)

I missed a flight, with the whole family recently. All my fault too. I knew we were on the first flight of the day to LHR, which used to be 6:50 but they moved it to 6:30. We'd have made it if we weren't checking a bag, but as the Basel airport is small, the same check in staff go to gate for boarding, so managed to get there as they'd left and shut check in.
Had to hire a car and drive all the way back for the weekend and back again. Nice 2000km driven in 3 days.

I've never missed a flight although my first time flying business confused me as the first call in the lounge is technically the last call for the flight, overall. Mild panic when you walk out all relaxed after the second call in the lounge and then see all the boards saying "flight closing" or whatever it is :p

I once saw a young (ish) Dad on his way to Heathrow on the tube, with his family of 2 young kids and wife, realise they'd got the time for their flight totally wrong and they'd missed it by 2hrs or so. The guy practically had a meltdown. They had 2-3 massive suitcases, pushchairs etc. Really felt for the guy, he looked like he was going to start crying there and then :(

There's an idea.

My travel insurance told me today that they wouldn't entertain such a claim as it's classed as "abandonment".. even tough we completed our journey to the airport, got parked up and cheeked for alternative flights at the time..

Kent police statement...

In a statement they said: “The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and Eastbore tunnel at the Dartford Crossing have now re-opened following a serious collision but please do expect some delays.

“Officers from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses following the incident, which were called to at 4.42am on Friday 3 November 2017.

“The collision involved a silver Audi A1 and a commercial lorry on the southbound carriageway of the Dartford River Crossing.

“The collision is reported to have happened on the Kent side of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and a woman in her twenties has been taken to a London hospital with serious, life threatening injuries.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw the lorry, which is a white in colour with red and blue writing on the side. It was towing a drawbar trailer in the moments before the collision.

“One man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in custody at this time.”

I think you'd struggle with the credit card company. Surely the argument for them is whether or not service was provided or not. If the flight took off -- it was.

Thats harsh.

I went on a flight to Japan via Finland last year, got stuck in traffic for nearly 3 hours but with 10 mins before take off they let me on, I was well surprised.

I only had hand luggage and it was my first time I went with hand luggage only (that new suitcase paid for itself :D that day).

I haven't but I had a call stupid o clock in the morning from my friend missed her flight because her phone alarm didn't go off. So I had to transfer money into her account so she could rebook her flight. Was only £75 so wasn't too bad.

Had this a few months back on an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul with a connect at Tehran.

I missed the flight by about an hour due to a delay in KL (not my fault).

The next flight wasnt for 36 hours but they did offer to put me up in a 5 star hotel in Tehran.

One problem though, this was during the inception of Trump's travel ban and because I am a regular traveller to the US I refused to go through immigration to get an Iranian stamp on my passport. I wanted to remain in no mans land.

So in short I was stuck there with crappy wifi and only the lounge seats for comfort.

Awful, awful and awful.

She was lucky.. There were no flights for us all weekend from any of the London airports.

Thanks to US immigration at Seattle being overwhelmed, despite my flight arriving an hour early, I missed my connecting flight to Bozeman, so I had to stay a day in Seattle, then got the last flight from Seattle to Bozeman, getting to my hotel at 01:30, with an 06:00 start in the morning!

I had to cancel 2 flights this year. I didn't get a refund but claimed some money back on my insurance policy. In both instances I phoned the airline and claimed back the Air Passenger Duty (APD). I listed this on the insurance documentation. Agreed it wasn't a lot but money in my pocket is better than in theirs. I actually asked the insurance company if they encouraged claimants to claim back the APD and thereby reduce the amount of the claim. They stated that they did NOT approach claimants to do so. A bit strange really as someone less honest than myself could have made the claim against the insurance company and then ask for a refund from the airline.

According to Martin Lewis there is no statutory length of time after cancelling/missing a flight that a claimant can ask for a refund. Although I seem to remember him saying that for some flights the admin fee imposed by the airline is more than the APD. Fortunately in my case they weren't.

I'd fight that tooth and nail, pretty much why you pay for insurance in the first place! Keep pushing they always try and get you to walk away first.
