Watched a few YT videoes about these, but wondering if anyone out there has bought the Tradfri range yet and if it is any good compared to the likes of Philips?

I know Ikea do not have Alexa support but that is coming, the same for coloured bulbs.

Obviously the price is appealing being cheaper.

So anyone got any of these yet and how well did they do?

Look at the TP Link bulbs instead. I think they’re better quality that both the ikea and hue bulbs, don’t need a hub and have decent support as long as you don’t need HomeKit.

I ended up getting the starter box, plus the GU10 and a coloured bulb.

After a frustrating experience trying to get it all out of the boxes, worst packaging from Ikea ever had, got it setup on my desk plugged into my switch which everything else is plugged into but would not connected and seemed to be in a reboot loop, now the instructions say to plug directly into the router, but being that I had a switch in my room I though no don't need to do that, however when I plugged the gateway directly into my router it worked first time very odd.

Pairing the bulbs is a bit of a pain atm, as you have to go into the App, add a device, find the remote that you paired during the setup, hold that by the bulb, press the button on it for 10 seconds or so the bulb will flash then will appear in the app.

From there you can assign bulbs to groups, create moods etc, currently Tradfri does not support any digital assistant but this according to their Twitter feed is due to be rolled out on 1st November. The coloured bulb I got is pretty good but atm the app only allows you to select a pre-defined set of colours, rather than having ability to pick any colour you like.

So far I am pretty happy with the use of it, and with Alexa integration I think will work out really well, for me the cost of the bulbs is a winner, substantially cheaper than Hue bulbs once you have bought into the eco-system, as startup costs are pretty much the same.

So Ikea have recently released an update that allows for Alexa and Homekit intergration with Google Home to follow shortly.

Seems to work well, annoyingly at the moment Alexa does not see the scenes/moods you have created in the Ikea app so you have to re-set them up in Alexa.

I found the process a bit clunky, in the Ikea app, I have moods setup so certain bulbs at brightness etc which works well in the app, however Alexa can not see these, so I have to then create new groups and then routines to set the bulbs to various brightness though can not change colour in the routine though.

But so far it works, I am not sure if Hue would have been simpler but will cost me a lot less in Ikea bulbs than Hue ones

I bought the Tradfri bulbs a while back, had a few issues to start with where the bridge would need a reset before it could be seen by my phone after a night and also had one of the coloured bulbs die after a few days of use although Ikea accepted the return and replaced with a new one. Bridge seems to be more stable after the latest update and I'm pretty happy with the system, far better value than hue although it doesn't have as many features as hue and the current colour palette is smaller. It'd be nice if they bring out some coloured LED strips lights.

Does anyone know if these will fit normal GU10 down lights? I've read that a lot of standard down light units will not take Hue bulbs due to the increased length of the bulb, and as I'm just about to buy 18 down light units for my lounge I want to buy the right sized ones to accomodate these!

I bought the normal Tradfri GU10 that is only warm light as that seems to have a flat lense opposed to a raised one, and they fit fine in my down-lights in my lounge.

I do not know if the Hue ones will fit

Can the Tradfri bulbs work with an existing HUE setup without the need for a Tradfri controller/gateway?

As I understand it they need to be on a certain version of firmware to do that, however from what people have been saying there is no obvious way to know what firmware is on the bulb from the packaging, if it is the wrong firmware only a Tradfri gateway can update them.
