Hello Good people of OCUK

I Was wondering if I could pick your brains.

My Friend is planning to purchase a new PC for gaming and after me doing research on AMD and putting together a build he is for some reason hell bent on a Intel build /sigh

He has a total of £750 available and I was wondering if I could get some advice on an upgrade rig:

He plays games in 1080p
We will require:
CPU
Motherboard
RAM
GFX card 1060 or the like
SSD
PSU
Liquid cooler

I would greatly appreciate if someone with the knowledge could advise on the hardware best suited for the price range. He has a OS.

I would be most grateful for any advise available.

Many thanks

Hi Danny75
He has some lame 22" monitor, I did advise to upgrade but he is more interested in the hardware and will deal with the monitor in a few months, so "neither".
He has a Gaming case i believe is a "Corsair Carbide Spec 03 Gaming Case" but i am not 100% certain and if that's an issue can we include a cheap case?

Many thanks in advance

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £799.59
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Or a Ryzen 1600 bundle (which comes with 3 free games):

You could swap the RX 580 for a GTX 1060 6GB, as each card is better for specific games.

Total: £258.89
(includes shipping: £9.90)

As you can see, it's quite difficult to get an Intel build under £750 with semi-decent parts. The AMD build doesn't perform much worse (or at all in some games) yet costs £50 less.

Each card trades blows depending on the game.

Those aren't bad cases when it comes to airflow. Got great temps with a similar SPEC 01 case once extra fans were added (only brought the one).

Official max CPU cooler height is 157mm (they tend to underspec a bit). There's a very good chance the Hyper 212 Evo will fit anyway, despite being 159mm. Would have to be unlucky if it didn't.

Managed to fit an Antec H600 120mm liquid cooler at the top of the Spec O1 (it wouldn't fit on the rear thanks to a rivet in that corner of the case and the shape of the Antec radiator which was squared off not rounded on the edges), despite the Spec 01/03 not having top radiator support. I used two screws on holes for the second top fan mount, and rested the other side on an added piece of hard foam, which was itself resting on top of the rear fan. Checked for sturdiness and it was well and good.

So if he still wanted a liquid cooler and doesn't mind paying extra for it, the Antec H600 is a good choice for the money (not sure if AMD AM4 mounting exists for it but fine for Intel). If he'd prefer a 120mm liquid cooler on the rear, then go with another type that has rounded off edges on the ends of the radiator to (try and) avoid the rivet.

Think it's now being replaced with the Antec Mercury:

Looks like the same radiator with square corners.

Build on @southernorth , drop the killer for Pro 4, save pennies .
And avoid palit dual , use £15 saved on your better model or

Really not worth the dual, meant as a cheap system builders card and only 2 year warranty
I didn't pick the Pro 4 as it doesn't have much VRM cooling, and if the OP is overclocking the i3 then that isn't great. The better motherboard also gives the possibility of dropping in a better CPU later on, and not having to worry about a low-quality board.

I picked the cheaper Palit card to keep it just under £750 as the OP didn't indicate any wiggle-room on the £750 figure. I put together the Intel build to show it isn't really feasible to keep under budget with semi-decent components.

I do completely agree though, a better card should be picked but it depends how strict the £750 really is.

Did you see the budget shoot off, wasn't to bad, with air cooler. VRM should be kept in check
But can also see your point, plus it does look such a nice board to for the little extra pennies

3GB could be used instead. Got a bit of a bad rep , but if no 4k textures being used and OP can post games played, should be able to check max VRM limit for given resolution. If he has, my bad, bit whacked out today
Friend had had his King PSU rendering for a full 7 days 24/7- cool, solid , quiet - wondering when EVGA will ask for a unit or if they'll lock down this version
