And has since watched the original trilogy i.e. Episodes 4-6?

I remember during the years that the Star Wars prequels were rolling out (when I was a young keyboard warrior of many an internet forum) a common response to those that said the prequel trilogy was sub-standard in relation to the original trilogy was that people who 'grew up with the original trilogy' were biased and those who grew up with the prequel would remember them 'just as fondly' as they got older etc.

So. Who is young eneough to have grown up with the prequels and has since watched the original trilogy and subsequenly the new films? Which do you prefer? How would you rank them?

I was only 8 when the first prequel was released, but I had seen the originals a few years before when my parents bought me the gold VHS box set in 1997. I watched them so many times I wore out one of the tapes... Then the Phantom Menace came out and I thought it was awesome, mostly because of the updated visuals of this universe I had come to love. Even Jar Jar had my approval, and I felt the same about AotC and RotS too. I was simply getting more Star Wars and that's all that mattered to me.

Then I grew up... :p

I've watched the prequels again many times since then, and whilst I'll never skip them, the first two aren't especially great... I never noticed the terrible writing, acting and other flaws when I was an overly excited child, but they're very obvious now. I definitely prefer watching the originals, but I do really enjoy episode 3 and would say that's probably my second favourite film. Ewan McGregor Obi Wan is also my favourite character too.

1. Empire
2. Revenge
3. Return of the Jedi
4. A New Hope
5. Clones
6: Phantom Menace

I loved the two new films too, but for some reason they just don't really feel like part of the same universe if that makes sense. I watch the first six and they go together nicely, then 7 comes along and it's like you've put on a completely different sort of film. The style of it reminded me more of these modern superhero films like The Avengers or something rather than Star Wars.

I think they came really really close - if they removed 1-2 silly things and spent a little more time on substance over style they'd have nailed it.

I was 16 in '77 but was too busy with O-Levels then leaving school and starting work to pay much attention. Tended to think of them as kids' films (including the sequels) so never understood all the hype until quite a few years later. Back then there was no internet to garner opinion or read reviews, it was either word of mouth or what you read in a newspaper review.

Now much cherished part of our Blu-ray movie collection and hoping at some point Disney (who now own the rights) do a 4K transfer.

While we’re on the subject, you can see the Millennium Falcon on google maps.

search for Barrow Hills Golf club and have little look around lol

The first film I saw out of all 6 was the Phantom Menace in the cinema when it was released (I was 11 at the time). I remember quite liking it, which is probably due to it being the first Star Wars film I had seen and thinking it was all awesome. I then watched the original trilogy after that and instantly fell in love with those. Following on from them I then watched clones and revenge as they were released.

My thoughts echo G-MAN's some what, I liked the new films at the time however as I've grown up I'm not the biggest fan anymore. I really dislike Phantom Menace, AotC isn't much better however RotS isn't actually too bad and my favourite of the three.

Difference for me is I really liked the new films so far, TFA was pretty good IMO although I get the critisims it recieved and I really really enjoyed Rogue One. If I had to order them it would probably be something like:

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of The Jedi
4. Rogue One
5. The Force Awakens
6. Revenge of the Sith
7. Attack of the Clones
8. Phantom Menace

Pretty much completely agree with your ranking there.

I'd be tempted to swap sith and TFA. Close though.

I think I'd agree with this order, although at the time I thought The Phantom Menace was the best of the prequels (darth maul and that lightsaber  )

I was around 7 when TPM dropped and I loved it to bits. I didn't revisit star wars until I dated a girl in Sixth Form that was obsessed with them and showed me the light (;))

Like a few others mentioned I was ~8 when TPM came out. Was already a huge fan of the originals. The amount of times I rented ROTJ from extra vision I could have bought shares in Lucasfilm. So at that age I just enjoyed the prequels, because Star Wars. Was only when I got older I realized how bad some of the dialogue was, especially the cringey creepy Anakin/Padme hookup in AOTC. But I still enjoy them all for various scenes. Duel of the fates in TPM and the final battle between Obi Wan and Anakin in ROTS being highlights.

I was 15 when the phantom menace came out. I remember a group of us went to see it on launch night and left disappointed... the hype at launch was immense and aside from the battle at the end and the pod race, it was nothing compared to the original trilogy.

Then there was AOTC, which was a space rendition of PM questions and ROTS which felt like the loooooonggggeeesssst film ever.

Also... I don’t like sand :(

You're probably the only person I’ve seen to rate ROTS as the best :o

it had my favourite moments

march on the jedi temple
order 66
darth Vader Vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
also count doku vs anakin and General Grievous vs Obi-Wan Kenobi (I wish this fight was a bit longer)

Obviously not Star Wars related but I think you'll find this equivalent level of fondness in that 'generation' with the Harry Potter stuff rather the prequels. I don't think the prequels quite captured the same magic of the originals.

Was a prequel lad myself! Hated them when I was young and I hate them even more now.

Think I'm in the rather unique position of having seen the prequels BEFORE the original trilogy and it soured me on the latter for quite a while.

Attack of the Clones I still maintain is one of the worst movies ever made. It has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Phantom Menace at the very least has the podrace scene and Revenge of the Sith... erm... has a bit of editing? Everyone talks about that last saber fight between Obi Wan and Anakin, but there's NO stakes! You know exactly how it's going to end. Is the spectacle of it impressive? Perhaps, but only from a CGI perspective. It's so messily edited that no shot sticks with you and that dialogue...

"From my point of view the Jedi are evil!"

Nothing else need be said xD

It was more the choreography of the fight. Majority of it was real from what I recall. I remember watching a making of feature on the DVD or something and there was a whole bit about them learning the fight sequence.

Tbf, I'm not going to give them points for decent choreography in a universe based solely around being good with a glowey wizard sword xD

Even though they were originally released before I was born I had seen the original trilogy plenty of times as a kid before Ep1 came out.
