Hi,

Completely ignorant about the intracacies of doing this, but I want to replace the router supplied by sky. I'm on 40mb fibre but the sky router will never reach near those speeds via WiFi (wired does)

I understand if I uprate my router I'll achieve better WiFi speeds. Which model would you advise? Is it possible to overdo it with something too good or is it a case of the more expensive the better? (I thought if I'm only up to 40mb, there might be no reason for the top of the range offerings).

How about Asus RT-AC56U? Would I see much performance difference to say the 68u or 87u?

Location is a detached, 2 storey property with 2 people and several devices.

Thanks

Dunno, not used an Asus router with external antannae. I have however used the Sky Q hub since the day they allowed existing customers to upgrade ... and it works well for me. Plus there's no complications with authentication to Sky that you get with 3rd party routers.

Had it working out of the box with sky fibre for over a year now. Haven’t tinkered too much with anything. Very stable. Have probably had to restart it twice in the last 12 months.

>500Mbps same room. 5GHz

c50Mbps in our loft extension on the other side of the house. Essentially the furthest point from the router where I have my home office. Live in an old Edwardian house with brick walls.

Great piece of kit IMO. I’ve got 8 or so devices wired including a Synology NAS. 4 Sonos speakers, a couple of amazon echoes.

Have used homehubs and sky routers in the past and the difference is night and day if you have a heavy traffic home network.

Replaced my sky hub with a D7000 solid as a rock all round has plenty of options QOS for one..

Why waste your money on more sky rubbish if you know your sky password and name save the extra and go 3rd party.

Explain to me why the Q hub is rubbish.

Upgrading to a Q hub you get 5g + 1000Mbit/s and minus 2 LAN ports its still a basic router>£65
So the catch is up & downloads speeds is still 2.4GHz, watching via Sky Q Mini or My Q on any Sky Q Box uses 5GHz.

WiFi Bands>2.4GHz, *5GHz*
2xLAN ports>10/100/*1000Mbit/s*
Note only 2 LAN ports not 4, if you need a extra ports you have to buy a switch.
No USB Ports.

I've upgraded from fibre to fibre max which includes free Qhub posted out to me. I'm going to see how I get on with this and if not satisfied I might upgrade that router.

So lack of many many features = rubbish? There I was thinking you were going to say it wasn't fit for purpose.

I've been using one since I could get my hands on it mainly for the wireless. Must be a good 18 months. It just works and it's reliable.

IMO It's well specified for a ISP router and a quantum leap from the SR102, where about the only thing going for it was reliability. Bit unfair to be slagging it off compared to something that typically costs well over twice as much…

It’s dual band, and the 5GHz 3x3 ac wireless is insanely quick to my Apple Mac. I've seen over 1200Mbit tx rate reported.

2 Gigabit LAN ports is fine, I've already got a gigabit switch which I've owned for the last 10 years in the room where the computer stuff is. 4+ gigabit ports on the router in the centre of the house near the master socket would be pointless, plus a reasonable 8 port gig switch is ~£20. What you would term the missing ports are being used internally for the Q features like Powerline.

Why would I want USB ports on a router? Why would an ISP want to give me USB ports on a router?

Looks like the SR102 and Q hub WiFi are worlds apart. Happy, it does what we need.

Also got the Netgear D7000 here and can't fault it, just works. Used it on Sky fibre for a year before I changed to BT infinity and it's been great on both services.
