Done some googling but can't find anything of any merit. Do we have anything that would suggest we will get another round of CPU's on 2066 like we did 2011-v3?
Reason I ask is I'm thinking of upgrading platform, the 7900x would be lovely but with everything I need it's a little unrealistic. I'm thinking of getting asrock oc formula mb, 4x 3600 rgb g skill ddr4, new 1200w PSU, full loop with D5, petg tube, d5, 2x 240mm and 1x 360mm rad. The 7800x oem can be had on OC for £260. This would lead the door open to an upgrade later on while not annihilating my bank account now.
Josh.

As with all new platforms there will be new revisions of both the chipset and M/boards revisions as well. history tells us this with everything new. how quick that comes is never clear, could be a year could be 2 years. we have already seen VRM cooling improvements on boards.
its like a lottery do you jump in now and enjoy a new platform or do you wait for improvements in revisions to come. thing is you never know if around the corner a new revision is lurking.

I know, I want the platform upgrade as my z97 setup is getting a little long in the tooth now. Think I might stump the extra £200 and get the 7820x.

I have thought that as well but don't know if the never ending fiddling would annoy me, there is a lot to be said for finding the limit easily and just using it. Intel seem to have this element sorted a lot better.
Josh.

Intel are 8 generations in at this point. Read back on problems before Sandybridge and how much sandy brought things along.
I'm... in the same boat as jigger, sit it out for a couple of months, we'll have Zen+ news fairly early in the new year (get the Christmas shopping season out of the way..)
They'll have learned a lot from the first gen, expect significantly less teething issues in the 2nd.

It's a bad time of year to be buying anyway, prices are never as good as they appear and usually quietly stay lowish after the new year sales.

I think it depends what you mean by never ending fiddling. If you want to push a system right to the edge then you need to fiddle with all of them regardless.

I'd say that's probably on the back of Ryzen and memory tweaking/etc.
First gen teething problems, no more.

It was with regards to the memory tweaking, I was going to wait until there's a sale either Boxing Day or new year anyway just deciding what to get. AMD are quite far behind in single core perf, if they can get at least another .5 ghz then it would interest me.
The HEDT platform does interest me more though to be honest. If intel get another set of processors on 2066 then I could upgrade to that further down the line. Extra PCIe lanes always come in handy.
Josh.

Except for single core, where intel runs away.
Multicore is anyone's game depending on workload.

That is a massive exaggeration even for you. The current line up of CPU's fall into a very narrow performance band.

What are you doing with the system?

Oh come on, its plastered all over the internet that intel wins the single core race.
Intel are about 10% ahead at stock (7900x vs 1950x).
Looking at the OP's setup, he will be overclocking thus increasing this lead even further. Note that threadripper doesn't overclock very well.
If these margins are tiny for you then I can see why you are still stuck on that ancient 290x.

The guy has come in asking about x299 and yet another thread where you are trying to ram AMD down their throats.

I'm a technical manager for a mobile telecommunications company, I get to work from home a few days a week and normally use my own pc as the laptop I've been given just isn't quick enough. I game a few hours a night maybe 3-4 nights a week so single core speed is important. I've started building databases and want to expand my knowledge in this area, the multi threaded aspect of x299 would come in handy at some point I believe. I often review a lot of other people's work as well and compile reports, compressing multiple large files for upload can take a long time at the minute, again large core count would be great in that respect.

You can keep saying this over and over but it's simply not the case.

I'm not trying to RAM anything down anyone, just pointing out that waiting for Ryzen+ is the sensible thing to do when you're looking at spending big money. Coffee Lake has failed to drop prices and if anything has pushed them up. Chips like 7820K cost twice the equivalent Ryzen chip offering identical performance. Ryzen+ either pushes prices down or offers better options.

You probably won't need a lot of PCIE lanes TBH. what system are you using now?

System in my sig, 4790k @ 4.8 and gtx1080ti, was thinking of picking up another for sli and a couple of NVME ssd's.
Bit of a vanity project to be fair but I like having the best and use it frequently and can afford it.

I'd probably be tempted to go full retard and get the 18 core Intel. Nothing will beat it and you'll probably never need to upgrade again with a decent overclock. I was very tempted to get a binned 8 pack 7980XE and board.

Full retard..... :D great film. Think I'd rather have the 10 core and aim for 5.0ghz tbh.
