Amazon have bought the television rights to the LOTR series. They have said they are going to produce a TV series that follows storylines preceding the first LOTR movie. Possibly along the lines of Silmarillion.

This could be fantastic. Amazon are known not to be conservative when it comes to paying big money to produce shows. Grand tour was something like 8m an episode for a car show!

It will be interesting to see the writers and cast. However, I am not getting too excited as it could easily be 2-3 years before this hits our screens.

Hopefully, with the price they've paid for the rights, they equal that cost and more in production to deliver a brilliant series.

Wonder if there's any chat on cast roles already.
 
I'm not optimistic tbh. There have been so many misuses of the LOTR license in various forms over the years. I can't see how it suits a tv show at all. I'd much rather they try one of the other billion fantasy books that haven't been adapted.
 
I'm tentatively optimistic - there is a lot of good material in the preceding stuff - though I suspect it will probably be decent looking but play fairly fast and loose with the subject material with some core aspects that are true to the original but some extra fluff padded in for mass market appeal.
 
I don't really see the point - There's already 3 great movies and even though technology/CGI has moved on, I can't see that even Amazon would have the budget to do it justice.
 
Some people in here are weird, GoT (which I have never watched) has been praised to the hilt, this is a no-brainer and there's lots they could do with the show.

I'm excited about what we will get.

The ASoIaF books are quite plot dense though. Whilst I've only dipped into the Silmarillion I never found it that interesting, and if they instead opt to create new stories in Middle Earth they run the risk of them not being as high quality as already well regarded fantasy. It's probably not a risk in terms of money because of the strength of the brand, but in terms of quality I'd think there are possibly better options.

Large difference between a book adaptation which the creator is on board with and helping with and a show which is going to try and create new material based on a book (but not using book material) by a long dead author who will obviously have no input.

It's almost like they're trying to get a bit of that GoT dollar before interest in swords and sorcery wanes again.
 
I would really like someone to flex their imagination and come up with a TV series or film based on life years after the Lord of the Rings. A world with the last remaining Elves and Dwarves. Maybe with an Ent, Quickbeam as the last surviving Ent. Of course Tom Bombadil would still be there.

Not sure if I would like it to be set in the time when Aragorn is an old king or set long after he has died.
 
I'd much rather they did something with the likes of Raymond E Feist (Magician series of books) or better still Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy) :(

The fear is over whether they will feature the same characters in this as have appeared in the LOTR films and how they will be done - So many of those actors made the roles their own and did such a grand job, that anyone stepping in would never live up to expectations.

It's not as easy as swapping Dario Naharis actors, to see if anyone notices...!! :D

I think the problem is what's the threat? At least with stuff set before LOTR they have a vague clue what Tolkien had in mind either through Silmarillion or his notes. After LOTR... there's no threat. The dark lord is destroyed. ANything remaining would be minor stuff.

Not sure why it would be the last remaining dwarves either, where are they going? The elves it could be argued are mostly going to the west but the dwarves aren't.
