Weekly disposable income

You were advocating removing the cause, so the obvious extension to that is you have a way of doing that in mind which you support.

I would have advocated removing Hitler from power in 1938, doesn't mean I have a way of doing that!

Do you think Theresa May is the best PM ever? If not why haven't you got rid of her yet?

Good ole' GD. Turn x into xyz.

"omg they feed chicken nuggets to the children!!!!!1111 mine only get corn feed chicken at 30 a kilo. They're bad parents!!!!111 Mire my parent gainzzz."

I have friends that earn 200k a month (with children), and they're no where near as snobby as some on here, who probably don't even clear 50k/year after tax.

You're comparing people in the top 0.000001% and saying they're nowhere near as snobby as some people in the bottom 99%...well shock bloody horror.

Your children will take some feeding at 6ft 10 or whatever you keep reminding us your height is FurryLemon, shouldn’t be an issue on your salary you regularly bring up though :D

I'm basically poor these days despite doing pretty well. I put so much of my wages into overpaying my mortgage, pension, savings and investments that it's like being 21 again... Standing order gives me my spending money each week into a starling account.

Hopefully I won't get run over by a bus and it'll pay off in the end.

It does make me appreciate what it was like to live on a low income again and what it's like to struggle sometimes. I have to be much more careful with spending now but the plan is to be mortgage free very quickly. Hopefully next year.

I've mentioned my height maybe twice, and it was in context with the subject at hand. As for my salary, well I'm sorry if it makes you feel small. People bang on about earning xx,000 per year and no one bats an eyelid, I mention it a few times, in context, and it gets bought up every time someone has an issue with something I say.

Well boohoo.

It doesn’t make me feel anything, I believe very little of what people put on forums and expect the same in return, there’s enough people who tell porkies about things face to face for me to start bothering about some text behind a username.

If you are doing so well then good on you :)

He's doing so well he considers people who are earning about 3x the national average as being a low benchmark!

I wouldn't worry about the show off snobs, some couldn't even run a bath on here :D

200k a month i would like some of that ;)

50k is twice the national average. In my circle of friends 50k is a weeks pay to 2-3 years pay. I never hold anyone's financial statues against them. If we get along and share common interests then I'm happy to be friends with anyone. Obv money does impact on certain parts of life. Like I can afford to repair my 40ft sail boat as and when required, whereas a good friend of mine would need to save hard for a good year/two to do the same repair work. I don't hold that against him, and in return he's no bitter that I spend freely.

Money is only a barrier if you make it so.

The national average pre tax is about 24k. You clearly stated 50k after tax. To make 50k after tax you'd need to be earning about 75k. 75/3=25. So as I stated 3 times average.

As for your last line, try and say that to someone who can't afford to put food on the table or heat their home.

You're definitely the right man to be considering issues of poverty.

I grew up poor. I grew up in a house where you might not get a hot meal for a few days, but instead maybe a stale doughnut or a kidney punch. Don't confuse me with the silver spoon brigade. i earned my bragging rights the hard way. Hard work and hard knocks.

Tell me, what do YOU know of poverty?

I'm betting...not a lot.

Not much personally, but then I'm not the one bragging about my bragging rights - meta - while pontificating about how "money is only a barrier if you make it so" which is easy to say when it is not a barrier by any stretch of the imagination.

Your claims to personal experience of poverty are fine, but maybe go with those rather than "I can imagine what it's like to be poor because while I can afford to repair my yacht with trivial ease, my friend would find it considerably harder".

We should be removing the cause, not sticking a very expensive plaster over it..

That would involve forced sterilisation, which call me old fashioned, wouldn't go down too well in most quarters. I do agree though that the cause is feckless women opening their legs too often. 2nd generation benefit breeders breeding to get their council house and benefit money so they never have to work, just like mum did....

The benefits system is supposed to be a safety net, not part of normal planning. And raising a child in poverty carries a massive risk of negative outcomes for the child.
It does. So why do we so resent helping them not live in poverty? Their circumstances are not of their making.

And the benefits system is no more a safety net than is education. Once upon a time only those with means would educate their children. A decision was taken to provide schooling to all, for the benefit of society.

Something I believe is far less common than the media would have us think. I'd wager a small percentage of people living solely on benefits are choosing to do so.
