Online anonymity 'dangerous'

Prince William has described anonymity online as "really, really dangerous"

Wrong. Forcing children to give real names and ages is making it MORE dangerous ffs. Especially stalkers.

I swear I cant believe the amount of fake propaganda being spewed out in recent times.

This is just a fake propaganda to make parents relinquish even more parental duties. And to get parents to get more of their kids on their internet. What we should be doing is telling kids to just **** off till they're mature/mentally strong enough to simply not get bullied. Not forcing vulnerable kids into an inherantly dangerous domain and lying to them that it's safe because they're using their real name. How does that work? Makes no sense whatsoever.

Personally I would hate to grow up in today's times, where every kid has a smart phone, social media etc.

I was lucky not to ever be bullied throughout school, but I can imagine it's 100x worse now for kids that are bullied. Bullies can do it 24/7 now due to social media, snapchat etc.

Exactly.

So it's a GOOD thing if a child can use a pseudonym and ONLY give this pseudonym to his trusted peers. But it looks like prince william wants to make this impossible for children :(

I find it very horrible that kids cant have a pseudonym and stay anonymous, and that they MUST be able to be found by their bullies. Horrible. and Evil.

If you getting bullied online, then you letting yourself be bullied. If you got a problem with someone, put them on ignore and block them, leave whatever group you are in.

In the end, you staying inside the boxing ring.

Well, you've basically solved online bullying in two lines. I'm sure there are no difficulties with this.

That's not how the internet works. Asking for first and last name, and publishing comments under that name is not ending anonymity. The child will be using their real name on their profile and the bully will be using a fake profile. Just because a first name and last name are asked, doesn't mean it's actually a real first name and last name. The INNOCENT person will be more likely to have used their real name and that is WHY the bullying can happen at all!

Then they have to make up a fake Facebook account etc. It makes it harder to do, especially as it’s children that are the bullied and the bullies in this instance.

I get the impression that that’s what Wills is talking about though and hence why the article is about being against anonymity.

Have they not considered that educating kids in the effective use of online anonymity is the solution to them being bullied by anonymous folk?

They’re not likely to be anonymous people though. The anonymity means that the person they know at school can send them abusive messages, rather than just some random person they’ve never met.

It’s all very well saying “be anonymous” and only hand your handle out to “trusted” peers, but people know how schools and kids social circles work right? People can’t be that old that they don’t remember what it was like in school?

You can try educating them as much as you like, but kids don't really think through consequences as much as you would hope. Most of the online bullying cases I have had to deal with have involved non anonymous accounts on both sides anyway!

And that's why doxing is a popular way to ensure people's safety by removing their anonymity.

Hence making sure everyone knows who they are, where they live, and how they can be contacted in case of an emergency.
