Apparently there are 755,000 cars, vans and motorcycles currently being driven without tax  and since the paper disc was abolished in 2014 there are three times as many drivers evading paying it.
How could they think not having to have actual proof on your car would be better? they cant just rely on anpr and the small amount of police occasionally pulling people over. And it seems the threat of a fine through the post is not enough. I have even noticed the attitudes of people i work with differ since it became online from "i am not paying it" to "completely forgetting to buy it"
makes me feel like a proper mug for handing over £300 per year

Just report them online, works if they park on the road at work as they might eventually come out to check.

I keep reporting a van owned by a shady individual, no tax or MOT, unfortunately he parks it off road, but he's often out driving in it and has been for months, but unless they catch him in the act, he'll get away with it.

But yes, there really aren't enough resources available to clamp down on it, although I don't know not having a disc has must bearing on that. :(

They don't care unless a camera catches them on ANPR. People know theres hardly any traffic cops around now, so they take the risk. These are the same people who crash in to you and then drive off. Because if they stuck around and a cop does come by, they would be in deep **** :/

Someone has had a SORNed car parked in our cul-de-sac (public road) for over a year now. It's been reported at least twice, no one cares.

It's likely one of those fake money saving exercises the government budget 10million on a system that will never save 10 million, actually spend 100million it ends up being less efficient than the old system so costs 2x as much to run

ANPR should surely make it close to impossible to drive more than 20 miles without being flagged. Are there huge holes in the camera network?

This is almost a regular sight coming out of my drive:

Supposedly they've had two cars crushed now and still seem to think that tax is optional - they can easily afford to pay it as well :s I don't understand the mentality (its not like a protest thing either).

EDIT: Assuming it is the same person as before (I'm not 100% but car is parked in "their" space) - pretty sure it is - they are always shocked and surprised when they get clamped as well - you'd think they'd learn after the first time.

I’d have thought they did this to save money managing paper licenses.

Any money lost from those avoiding is probably less than the total money saved from going digital.

Absolutely, if you stay off the motorways and major link roads you can get anywhere without being flagged.

Even easier than that, I put my private plate on retention but never actually changed the plates. Insurance were informed so the car was all legal apart from that fact and I managed to drive around for two weeks without a single tug. That was driving up and down the North East's major motorway twice each day, passing numerous ANPR cameras across various routes too.

For all intents and purposes, my car should have flagged as not having tax, insurance or an MOT.

Not true, there was recently an incident where one of the neighbours had a brick put through their window which I witnessed. I was talking with the police describing the car and was told there was an APNR camera on the road going through our small town

Surely this can’t be true, we are lead to believe only the rich avoid paying tax. Even GD insists it’s so.

In an around my area there are quite a few cars with the yellow boot, there's even a big arse ML with a yellow boot on my road.

I think there might be genuine cases of forgotten but most of the cars I've seen "booted" are very old sheds so maybe not taxed on purpose?

£107m lost vs £10m predicted to be saved by abolishing the tax disc.

As for ANPR, yes it's out there but they aren't sending a roads policing unit after every ANPR hit on an untaxed vehicle.

Why do they need to? Send a penalty notice for £500 or whatever is needed. If it is untaxed it is uninsured so I really couldn't care less how much they are charged.

So do they know who the offenders are? If so, how? And what are they doing about it?

Surely it's time to scrap VED, it's nothing to do with roads anyway, hasn't been for years.

Another big fat fail.

Theres probably a lot of un-taxed cars in rural areas that are used for occasional local travel. The chances of getting caught are very slim.

It's not suprising that more people are chancing it when they see untaxed cars parked on the road for years and nothing happens when they get reported.
