Convert wall light to a plug?

Edit... I just realised I completely misread your post!! DOH!

Converting the wall lamp to plug in to a standard socket is easy enough.

First, work out the load that the lamp will generate (loads of calculators on websites etc. that will ask for bulb wattage) then go to your favourite DIY outlet or electrical supplier, buy some appropriate flex that is correct for the load and of the colour you want, remove the lamp from the wall, unscrew the existing wires, strip your new flex and attach to said lamp, then wire a plug (with an appropriate fuse in based on load calculations) to the other end. Finally, deal with the live wire hanging out of your wall and hey presto!

i personally wouldn't change a light for a socket, lighting circuits aren't designed to take the same load that a plug socket can handle.

It's genuinely completely safe as long as you actually do the maths for the loads you will be putting through the fixture (effectively this is completely down to the bulb, hence lamps you buy have a maximum wattage associated with them).

Your lighting circuit can handle less load than your mains circuit, ergo a wall light, converted correctly with the correct flex and plug will never put more load on the mains circuit than it ever would have on the lighting circuit.

With the advent of LED bulbs, you will find the load you are putting when you calculate it is unbelievably low!

I just try not to do anything in my house that could be a problem in future for someone else.
an extreme example, but what if future occupant comes in and plugs a tumble dryer or a 2/3k heater in to that switch.

You've misread the question as I originally did I think?

As far as I can tell, the op wants to convert a wall light into one he can plug into a plug socket, not convert the wiring currently used for a new socket!

The former can be done as I suggested quite safely, the latter should not be done, ever (for the reasons you state)!

It appears as if you've misunderstood the question Jim. He doesn't want to covert the lighting circuit so that it can power other items, he wants to take a wall light and wire it so that it can be powered from a plug socket.

This is completely fine and as manic said, get the right flex and you'll be cracking. Simply then wire brown (live) and blue (neutral) and cpc. ensure the cables in the wall are suitably dealt with.

You will need 0.75mm flex. You can get black or white or whatever colour you can get your hands on.

Just connect the flex to the light fitting and put a 13 amp plug top on the other end. I would remove the 13 amp fuse and replace it with a 3 amp fuse.

I assume the OP does not have wiring in the wall where the light fitting is to be mounted and so a nearby plug socket will suffice.
