Anyone else on a low fodmap diet? Hopefully here we can share recipes and ideas on what to eat as it's a very restrictive diet in terms of what you can / can't eat / drink. For those wondering what it is, it's a diet aimed primarily at IBS sufferers although there are benefits to many other conditions too, ranging from chronic headaches to skin conditions.

Going to start this on Monday, see how it goes. Anyone else here do / done this? Any advice?

seems like a FADmap to me...

It's actually not - it's a pretty logical approach to figuring out what you can/can't eat if you suffer from IBS symptoms in terms of eliminating everything that could potentially cause problems, then reintroducing things one at a time to find what are the actual guilty culprits, meaning you ultimately avoid needlessly restricting things you can digest fine. My mum did it somewhat successfully although it seems sometimes it's not individual things that set her off, but combinations of things or more likely their combined levels of things they contain.

Some people just seem to think any diet is a fad, did you miss the clinical trail bit which shows a huge improvement.
One day hopefully there will be easy tests for all these intolerances.
If we as a species ate what we designed to eat and not everything and anything then we would not have these problems yo begin with.. It's bizarre that we are the only beings on this planet who don't know what to consume to sustain us lol

Humans have evolved to get by eating a wide variety of things, that's part of the reason why we got to where we are because wherever we spread, we were able to eat what was available in that geographical region. That doesn't change the fact that there's a degree of variation at an individual level (and ethnic in some cases) though, with regards to tolerance for digesting specific things, and living in an environment where there's access to almost all the different foods that are available for consumption makes it more likely that one can bump into those specific things which don't agree with their digestive or immune system. I can eat nuts and shellfish, for some people consuming those can be fatal. I can eat onions all day long and suffer from nothing other than bad breath but if my mum eats a load of onion then she gets awful stomach pain and the squits.

it's this kind of unawareness that is the problem with us as a species.
so you can eat nuts and shellfish and no doubt other animals, ok problem is they are proteins and acid ash forming foods, things that are detrimental to the homosapien.
no wonder people have stomach and bowel problems with acidic stuff stuck in their intestines for long periods...have a look at a babies bottom if the nappy has not been changed for a while it is red and inflamed that's acidic...

edit - oh the alkaline diet, that in clinical trails fails to change the blood ph level other that transient blips.

Indeed. It's interesting that you refer to fad dieting in your first reply to this thread but then quote fad dietary advice.
i have not quoted anything nor given dietary advice but if you wish to rebutt the points i made please feel free.

don't know what the alkaline diet is but it's the lymphatic system is what we need to worry about not blood, if it strays far from 7.4 you are dead anyway...
 
Trust me, if I could carry on without this I would, but my stomach has given me trouble for well over a decade so it's about time I do something about it.

also had stomach issues for years so i feel ya, but changed my eating habits...out went the dead animals and dairy but also cut down drastically on the grains as well as stopping eating beans and started to eat more fruit, berries and salads.
not long also did a 2 month juice fast and i am glad i did...
 
The OP eating certain salad vegetables is what triggers his IBS symptoms. Some omnivores suffer from IBS, so do some vegetarians, some vegans, some LCHF people - it's got nothing to do with acidity, consumption of animals products or protein consumption in general - and is down to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
 
I have done the fodmap but have found that mine isnt really related to any specific food as such but stress and also when I eat too much in one go can trigger things.
I know other people who have done the fodmap and have found different foods that cause issues (onion seems to be a big one).

When I was doing fodmap it wasnt that difficult to follow if you are ok with plain foods and planning ahead for lunch. Eggs are good for breakfast and carrots and cucumber is good for snacks throughout the day.
The fodmap app by monash university is good and has some nice recipes. I paid for it and found it cery useful for quick checks when not sure.

Good luck. First 2 weeks were tough but it got easier after that.

just to point out humans cannot synthesis nine amino acids (phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, and histidine) therefore we have to consume protein to get these. Your stomach is full of hydrochloric acid while the pH increases to around 6 at the start of the small intestine.
