7740X decent place holder?

My obvious cheap upgrade path on Z97 would be to drop in a 4790k, but used prices are still very strong, in fact them seem too strong IMO.

The deal on the 7740X at £190 is cheaper than some used 4790ks I've seen(!), so a new rig on X299 and using the 7740X as a medium term placeholder seems decent logic no?

I know it's a nothing CPU not worth upgrading to in itself, but it should be a massive step up even for medium term, plus the bonus of a long term upgrade from one of the bigger X chips later on no?

The 7740X overclocked and with fast memory is a hell of a decent chip for some tasks. I'm not sure £190 on a quad and £250 motherboard is a good way to spend money just now, but take what most people say about 7740X with a pinch of salt.

I know the board cost is a bit OTT, but I'm thinking longer term that I'd get another upgrade out of it when they've lost value and are second hand only.

I know £190 for a quad is a bit steep, which is why I'm baulking at used 4790k prices!

The only other thing putting me off is the obscene cost of DDR4, the 4790k wins in absolute cost terms as I obviously have everything else, it's just weighing up the pros/cons of whether it's worth a new build or not.

Some of the black Friday deals are tempting. TBH with the 1800X at £290 a decent X370 board at £100 and £110 for 16Gb of RAM. The quad core X299 system would have to be dirt cheap, or I'd really need to use something the X299 board offers for me to buy a quad core over an 8 core.

Another option, cheers. Although I thought decent RAM was a must with Ryzen, is £110 RAM enough to get the most out of an 1800X?

Actually that makes more sense as I could get away with a B350 board for my needs and would be able to go back to SFF machine with an ITX board...

Hmmm...

Depends on your usage really, slower ram in some apps make no difference.
On the other hand ryzen could be a lot slower, all depends on what you'll be doing with it.

Depends. I bought bargain basement 2x8Gb 2133Mhz or 2400Mhz Hynix sets loaded the 2933Mhz profile and that was that. With the BIOS updates it seems 3200Mhz is doable with Hynix memory now.

7740 is a great CPU with delid all are 5ghz plus CPUs some upto 5.4ghz. Mem goes high, Uncore goes high!!! Nothing not to like about it!!!

I always wonder about the prospect of "cheap" x299 upgrades down the line.
Are they selling that well? And are others buying the entry chips now and thinking the same thing?

Feel like those chips will be priced high for good?

7640x, 7740x and 7800x we are dumping the stock, that is why OcUK is vastly cheaper than competitors on them, once they are gone we shall be de-listing the product. So unless a competitor decides to sell at such a low price (loss maker) you won't find them at the prices were offering again.

7800x seems pretty decent if you can find a cheapish X299 mobo to go with it. Should work out cheaper/same as CoffeeLake but with much more of an upgrade path.

the problem is buying a cheap processor on a platform is mostly a bad move.you dont save anything to spend more than you would instead of just buying a higher cpu. you end upgrading earlier and paying twice.buy once buy the right one.

Difference being we aren't talking about an i3 or Pentium K here, the 7740X should be more than man enough for most things short of production stuff.

Thing that makes me laugh, very recently an overclocked 7700k was a beast and probably the best gaming and all round CPU you could get, now it's like people are talking about some ancient i3 or something just because Zen and TR are around.

I'm sure a 5ghz+ 4c/8t latest spec CPU is still a beast and not really a compromise.

@Gibbo
Would you uphold the price for the 7800x in to the beginning of December provided you've still got stock? I get paid on the 4th that's all.
Josh.

The price will remain until stock is gone, we won't be buying any more, once these are gone we shall only be stocking retail product which cost a lot more, as such if it sells out nothing I can do sorry.

I reckon when you come to upgrade the 7740X will be worth very little. £190 down the drain.

As someone else said I bet you end up paying more than just getting the right processor the first time.
