Which one do I choose?

Hey guys, I'm after a new gaming computer and have waited until this week of deals to try and get some value. I've made a build list (mainly taken from places in this forum plus my own post) but can't decide between building that or ordering a pre-built that is on offer. Could you guys please help me diagnose which one is better? I'll use it mainly for strategy games at 1080p.

Choice 1

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £717.05 (includes shipping: £13.20)

I have an old HDD I can stick in this and would get windows elsewhere..

Choice 2

My basket at Overclockers UK:
  • 1 x OcUK Gaming Vision VR Gaming PC - Intel 8th Generation 3.6GHz Quad Core = £773.94
    • Processor:*Build Promo* Intel Core i3-8100 3.6GHz (Coffee Lake) Quad Core Processor
    • Memory:*Build Promo* Team Group Vulcan T-Force 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
    • Graphics Card:Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 Mini 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
    • Solid State Drive:Hynix SL308 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (HFS120G32TND-N1A0A)
    • CPU Cooler:Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm
Total: £788.04 (includes shipping: £14.10)

Any opinions and explanations would be really appreciated :).

First impression is that you a gtx 1050ti v a gtx 1060 while the ti will give you gameplay a 1080p lower detail the gtx 1060 is much more powerful and will give you more framrates with higher detail.

There is a £70 diffrence between the 2 systems so with a bit of jugling you should be able to get a gtx 1060 in the ryzen build if desired. Also the psu in the ryzen build is top tier while much cheaper quality in the intel system.

Cpu performance is dependent on games so i would read some reviews on each, last is the the intel system is pre built and has a 36 month warranty.

Micky is spot on. I would select one of the cases at £42.95 or below to save £30. With the £70 that is £100 of £110 to upgrade to the 1060.

Even consider moving down to the Cougar VTX550 @£48 to save £20 if the budget is fixed at £790 although I would prefer to keep the Superflower myself if possible.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm going agree and build my own, also just because I enjoy doing it. Will drop the case to make room in the budget.

There's a few gtx 1060 cards around the £200 mark, could anyone recommend one? I was also looking at the Radeon rx 580 red dragon as a possibility as it is on offer this week?

As alreadt noted, the big difference between the two builds is the psu. The op's build has a quality gold rated fully modular Superflower Leadex Gold 550w while the pre-built has a crappy bronze rated Kolink 500w, probably the semi-modular KL500M unless they are really skimping and stick the core series 500w in it. I would take the OP's build over the pre-built anyday but change the gpu to a GTX1060.

Choice one

1050 to will be fine for 1080p gaming, and with the costs of GPUs coming out and the jump every gen, getting harder and harder to sink £400+ on one .

Go for the p300 !

Would personally go for the MAX SSD. Reason being 25GB extra. When you go to install windows and it's formatted you send up with 10-15 less GB , then after windows and windows fall installed , you lose 40GB. Running disk cleaner to remove old windows versions and you gain back another 10GB .. but you see my point

Thanks for all the input.

Orbital, I think I'll do just that and do like the look of the case too, nice one. Quick question though please, you've upgraded the CPU to a Ryzen 7, was that just because it would fit in the budget? I'm just wondering if it would be needed or would it be overkill for the rest of the set up? Or are you thinking about me future proofing?

Only reason I ask is that my low budget is based on me recently moving house, so I'm thinking in a year or two i'll probably sell the whole rig and build something for double the value

If it was me I would drop to a 1600 and add in a 1060 or 580 gfx card.

I only did it for sale savings ! Would last longer, but have gtx 1060 means you can game harder a last a bit longer , GPUs have a much shorter tech life span , every 18 odd months new one comes out, etc . CPU last a good 4/6 years .

Thanks for your input guys, ordering tonight, just have one last thought..... This is my basket..

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £678.46 (includes shipping: £12.60)

Do i stick with the 1060 3GB or spend another £40 for the 580..

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £249.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

Did you increase to a 6gb 1060? 3gb really isn't enough for games.

I would potentially call up in the morning and change to the 6gb or the 580.

Go on OV3D and look at games reviews. Hate it went people keep saying 3GB isn't enough for 1080p gaming. Some games at 4k only use 3.2GB at best, some good recent ones do go over but 70% of games out there don't. Reason being, you just simply have to look at steam hardware survey to find out why !
Is a bit of a pain the 1060 wasn't just a single 4GB unit . Or that 3GB and 6GB units have different amount of cuda cores :(
If your worried about the 3GB card, Google VRAM review of the games you play or current newly released AAA titles and have a look .
Best case, can upgrade in a few years when you do start to hit a limit as you haven't sunk £700 in a Ti card which will be beat by a cheaper card the next gen :)

2GB doing just fine hehe

A game that does use a lot, eyes up Rx 580/Vega with 8 GB!

Again, look at the games you play or wish to play, would give you a feel

I ended up sticking with the 3GB 1060, just because I found a great deal on it elsewhere.

Thanks for the input orbital, I did check VRAM before I ordered and it looks like its going to play the strat games I am building this for just fine. I didn't want to fork out an extra £90 for a card that I'll probably get rid of this time next year

*60 series cards or 50ti cards great for changing every generation. Specially selling just before new launch :)

Post up pics of your rig when done :)
