Hello All

I am currently running with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor (3.64GHz) and am looking to upgrade. Is anyone aware of any restrictions i need to bare in mind when looking? I have been out of the PC gaming scene for so long and it all seems so much more complicated these days!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

What's your budget, do you have a copy of windows and which parts are you looking to upgrade?

i am running windows 10. Dont really have a budget in mind, just want to keep it fairly proportionate to the modest 'rig' i currently have. I want to upgrade the chip as it seems to be the weakness when searching for decent games to play but will also be looking to upgrade the graphics soon after (Currently have AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series)

What games do you want to play and what is the res of your monitor? Your current spec is incredibly out dated if I'm honest, buying new you'd need to purchase CPU, mobo and DDR4 ram as a minimum to upgrade processor, which will end up getting pretty expensive due to current pricing. Almost the only good news is over this weekend is the best time to buy there has been for a fair while..

It does not surprise me that the set up is out of date, although i am not too bothered as it still gets by (I am not really a AAA gamer). The current tower i had cost me less than £200 2 years ago, so its been excellent value.

Last year I purchased a load of DDR (16gb) which gave me a nice boost so the chip and mobo is naturally the next steps. Like i said before, i just need some pointers to which would be good for me to go for.

Thanks

Also, my monitor res is 1920x1080

You'll find even going low end Ryzen will give you an increase in performance, specially at 1080p . Though Ryzen 1400 with 4 cores and 8 threads would be better

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £342.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

thanks for this. it is exactly the info i was looking for. as i have already upgraded the ddr4 to 16gb then it would make sense to go for the better chip im assuming?

Heres the problem, your current RAM is DDR3, which is different to the DDR4 that now become the new standard, and as such its price is sky rocketing. So unless you want to go used CPU and motherboard to keep your current RAM (you can read up on an intel i5 4670 as a good start if this interests you, but obviously you will still be years behind the current processors and lose any real warranty/upgrade potential).

In all honesty if possible you should buy the ryzen listed above, it has future upgrade potential as the socket will be kept for at least another 2 generations of processors, and its not much more expensive than the used option if you can get a decent price for selling your current memory.

Ah ok, i see now, thanks for the heads up there. i need to have a look at the used market then and see what suits my needs. im wondering if its best to just max out what i have for another £200ish (used chip and mobo?) then look at a total upgrade in a couple of years time. i realise that this isnt necessarily what this site is set up for so i appreciate your help.

say i went for the intel i5 4670 chip. would that need a different mobo? or does it work fine? lol, i dont get how people are supposed to know this stuff!

thanks
