Hello everyone, new guy here first post!
Well not totally new I used to be a member way back before the forum nuke and for sometime after, I remember when the earthquake happened and the first page in GD was full of earthquake threads haha.
I lost interest in keeping up with things once I left here and got a laptop! Now a laptop isn't cutting it so I need a desktop and could do with some advice and all opinions welcome.
I'm not pc gamer, haven't even played my xbox for well over a year now, but early'ish next year I will be getting a VR set and playing a few games so it will need to be ready for that. I plan on getting a GTX 1080ti when I get the VR stuff, so for now I will be getting a cheaper gfx card that will be good enough until then. Everything apart from the gfx card should be VR ready.
What I will mainly be using the desktop for is virtual machines, maybe 3/4 for now and room for more in the future. I won't be using them for anything too intensive but could end up running up to 4 at the same time and possibly more in the future. I will be using two monitors side by side with each monitor split into two screens, so gfx card will need to be able to handle that.
I have already purchased a Ryzen 7 1800x / Crosshair 6 Hero / 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000MHz.
For storage I have decided on a Samsung 960 EVO Polaris 250GB M.2 for boot, and also a Samsung 500GB 850 EVO 3D V-NAND for additional space.
I want a 750w PSU as I think that should be enough with a bit to spare, but could be wrong? What PSU would people recommend?
I'm not sure what gfx card to get, as I will be upgrading it next year I really want to spend as small amount as possible on it, as long as it will handle the VM stuff and two monitors each split into two screens until then?
I'm not sure on which case to get either, I want a decent sized window in it at least, or possibly a glass case depending on cost. I don't know if I need a midi or full tower sized case, visually I'd prefer a midi over a full on tower but not sure if a midi would do with the setup.
I won't be pushing it with overclocking, I will be running the Ryzen 7 1800x at 4.0GHz and the RAM at 3000MHz if it is simple, if not I will set it to 2666MHz if possible, or whatever works without any issues.
When I get the 1080ti I'm pretty sure I won't be trying to overclock it.
I would like the case to have room to be able to water cool the mobo/cpu/gfx card should I decide to, even if I don't do it right away.
Cooling, again I'm not sure. To air cool or water cool? Visually and sound wise I'd choose water cooled, plus I always wanted a water cooled rig when I had my last desktop.
I had a look at the EK E240 DIY Bundle, how easy would it be to upgrade this to also do GPU cooling? Would it be possible to upgrade it to mobo cooling? I realise being aluminium I can only add other aluminium parts and not other metals? Would the A240 even handle my setup?
I really like the look and idea of the Crosshair 6 Hero monoblock, how much would it roughly cost to buy the parts individually for a water cooled setup using that?
One last water cooled option I was looking at was AIO, would the Kraken X62 280mm / be quiet 240mm handle the setup?
If I choose to go air cooled, can anyone recommend a good CPU cooler setup that's on the quiet side and would have no problems with the setup?
Should I be considering extra case fans / controller?
Thanks for reading and for any replies.
