Is my ram bottle necking my PC?

Hello all, looking for some advice on my pc.

My current build

FX6300 OC to 4.5ghz
gtx780ti
Avexir MPower Red Series 8GB ( 2 x 4gb) 1600mhz
750w power supply.

I play 1080p ultrawide.

I have been toying with the idea of adding more ram but have recently found out that Avexir is no longer sold.
Would i seen any benefit from 16gb and would it be recommended to go upto 1866mhz?

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure that there are some smarter people with more experience in these forums but I'm pretty sure that 8gb is plenty for 1080p gaming. Looking at your build I would say that money would be better spent upgrading that CPU.

have you been monitoring ram/gpu/cpu usage to see where you are bottle necking? (afterburner overlay will show you)

personally I wouldn't be shelling out money on ddr3 ram at this stage in its life cycle (it's eol) you might be better putting that money away towards a full system upgrade

It'll be the CPU which isn't a good partner for that 780Ti. DDR3 frequency doesn't make much difference (except when RAM is used as graphics memory for processors with integrated graphics). Bit different for DDR4, especially as there's a wider range of frequencies.

I'd only add more DDR3 if you see memory hitting full usage when you monitor it, and only if you find a deal say £25-30 second-hand for 8GB, or sometimes OcUK do a special £39.99 for a new 8GB kit DDR3 (doesn't happen too frequently). That'd be okay to tide you over till you upgrade your system with new CPU, mobo and DDR4 (if sticking to 1080p, keep hold of the 780Ti).

Also, it wouldn't need to be Avexir. It could be any other DDR3 1600MHz (or faster). Just try and match it as best as possible (voltage, frequency, timings).

Thanks very much for your help.

I have just brought a 34" ultra wide 1080p so will be staying with that for a few years atleast.

do you think there will be a lot to be had with upgrading to something like a new i5 8400 or ryzen 5 though? best part of 400 quid once ive got new ram and MOBO too

Yes.

If thinking on Intel, hold out till December/January when the budget Intel Coffee Lake boards are due and chip prices settle a bit. If going AMD and Ryzen, good time to buy now.

Yes.

i think i cant afford to do it til early next year.

do you think im worth changing to a amd card as my lg 34inch monitor is freesync?

Yes and no.

Yes, you'd have a much smoother experiences using freesync (just moved to it myself and it's amazing)
No, amd cards are all over the place price/performance wise. Amd used to be the bang for buck gpu provider, sadlyvtjays not currently the case.
Everything from mid to high is way out of sync pricewise - blame the miners! (Though amd themselves are partially to blame)
If you can suffer the issues you're having and see what the new year/Q1 2018 brings that would be my advice. The bigger tier coffelakes are due plus Ryzen is pencilled in for a refresh too so 1st gen Ryzen may take a tumble in price.
With any luck the bubble will burst on the mining front and gpu pricing might also come back in line with where it should be - of course these are all a lot of 'hopefully' scenarios!

ok thank you for the info.

I just played pubg and im only getting 30-40 fps and im maxing out my ram at 8000mb. so looks like it could be holding me back?

find someone that has recently upgraded their fx6300 that has 16gb of ram doing bugger all and offer them something for it.

I used to get decent frame rates with my overclocked fx6300, 16gb ram and rx480 card on a standard 1080p monitor. 16gb ram will give you a bit more but not significantly so I recon.

It seems like im constantly using all 8gb in PUBG but im not sure whether it will always use what ever you can throw at it.

would this as a match be ok? i cant find anything with the same timings but this is closest.

also could i not over clock my ram would that help?

Pubg shouldn't be maxing your ram usage unless you've a load of guff open in the background.

Your CPU will be the bottleneck even at 4.5GHz.

If you game at 2560x1080 this could also be bottlenecked by your 780 ti.

Run your fav games and run afterburner with Riva tuner (bundled) - set up your on screen display (google how to do this)

During gaming if your CPU is between 90-100% utilisation -this is a cpu bottleneck.

If your GPU utilisation is at 99% you are GPU bottlenecked.

If your ram usage nears 8gb you could get some cheap used ddr3 for pocket change. Even a 4gb module will work if u have the slots.

If you want to upgrade your PC now a Ryzen 1600 or Intel 8400 are your best budget picks and they are by no means budget CPU's.

Graphics card wise the 1060/1070/ti are good choices.

But as I said identify the root cause of the issue and resolve that. You'll probably find your cpu is the culprate especially In pubg. It's such a crap game optimisation wise.

Is it worth upgrading everything for a single game ?
